"The Australian Institute of Criminology (AIC), a Commonwealth statutory authority, was established in 1973, and operates under the Criminology Research Act 1971. The Director reports to the Minister for Justice and Customs and to a Board of Management comprising distinguished criminal justice practitioners from around Australia.

The minister has communicated his expectations of the Australian Institute of Criminology to which the Institute has responded with a statement of intent, including key performance indicators, and which informs our corporate plan. The Institute is governed by the AIC and Australian Public Service values and code of conduct "
