Aztec 'Whistles of Death' Recreated by Archaeologists

"A human skeleton buried in an Aztec temple with a clay, skull-shaped whistle in each bony hand" was uncovered about 15 years ago. But, no one had blown into the 'whistles of death' until recently. The eerie, ghostly sound they eminated was shrill and deathly.

A study is currently being done, to determine whether the Aztecs may have used sound as an ancient cure for illness. Though, the sound these noisemakers create is thought to have been made shortly before performing a human sacrifice.
