Bad Timing For a Twitter Promotion. Orbitz Giving Away Tickets, But No One Can Follow
posted June 24, 2009 - 1:30pmThis morning, the online discount travel merchant launched a campaign to build followers on Twitter by giving away airline tickets! Orbitz sent out the following message: "We’re giving away a free airline ticket today! FOLLOW @Orbitz & RT this msg to be eligible to win http://bit.ly bVSuU"
They quickly racked up a couple of thousand followers, however many Twitterers are complaining of the fact that they are not able to follow people today. It seems that there is some sort of glitch that is not allowing people to follow others. There have been a number of 'tweets' concerning this issue.
I just tried it myself and cannot follow people. When I click on the 'follow' button on someone's page, the message stating that I am now following is displayed, however the follow is not registered in the system.
It seems like it was a bad day for Orbitz to launch their follow campaign. They probably won't get as many followers as they hoped they'd get.
There are also many 'Twitter Follower builder" programs that will be negatively affected if people cannot follow anyone today.
Hopefully, Twitter will get this issue resolved soon. I know Orbitz is hoping they will too!
