Baked Apple Recipe - An Autumn Favorite

Baked apples have been a favorite comfort food for centuries. It just wouldn't be Autumn without them. The following recipe is a timeless classic.

Baked Apples with Nuts

Wash and core six tart apples. Set aside.

Chop fine a cup of walnuts, hickory nuts (if available), and chestnuts mixed. Add four tablespoons of brown sugar. Mix the nuts and brown sugar.

Fill the cavities with this mixture and place them in a baking dish. Pour 1/2 cup of water around the apples.

Bake 25 - 30 minutes at moderate heat (350 degrees Farenheit). The heat of ovens does vary, so keep an eye on the apples and make sure they are fork soft, without burning.

When baked, remove the apples to a large serving dish. Do not throw away the water/juice mixture from the baking dish! Instead, to the baking dish juices add 1/8 teaspoon grated nutmeg, a couple pinches of cinnamon, and a tablespoon of butter. Stir evenly and pour this mixture over the apples.

Sprinkle a little white sugar over the top and serve cold with cream or milk.

Makes a great dessert or special treat!
