When you visit Thailand, be sure to bring an empty garment bag for the trip home.

One thing you will notice about Bangkok is that there are quite a few tailor shops. I'm not sure if there are more tailors, massage parlors or 7-11's here, but at any rate there are a lot!

You can get great deals on quality bespoke suits and clothing for men and women. Usually tailors advertise deals like 2 or 3 suits, with 2 or 3 extra trousers or skirts, shirts or blouses and silk ties as well. Many will even include a dress for the women's package deals. These packages can range anywhere from $129 to $299. At either end of the price range, this is a great bargain for quality, custom tailored clothing. Many of the tailors here will keep your measurments on file which allows you to reorder online and have your clothes shipped to you anywhere in the world. Even with shipping costs, this is still a great deal.

Before you take your vacation, do some homework. Learn about fabrics, cuts and styles. Pick out some clothing from catalogs and magazines that you like (cut them out and bring them with you for reference). You may even want to go out and try on some high-end designer fashions to get an idea of what looks good on you.

When you get here stop into a few tailor shops and discuss what you want. Find the shop you feel comfortable with and can accomodate your needs and start the process of choosing your fabrics, styles and getting fitted for your new clothes!

Great deals can also be found on bulk fabrics and Thailand is famous for their silks, and if you are so inclined you can purchase bulk fabric and perhaps work out a deal with your tailor to make your special outfit or dress using the material you found in one of the many fabric stores.

Why do you say relax? Actually most of the tailor shop owners I know of are Sikhs and are nowhere in the Thai political system..lol Now, when you get into the nightclubs, bars and massage parlors..that's a different story! Also many of the smaller shops seem to have the same owner and the clothing will be made at the same place off-premises. I'm not from here, just spend a lot of time here. And have travelled quite a bit. (Never to New Delhi..just used it as an example) Never read a lonely planet book. Prefer books that just tell me facts like where things are. As far as people go, they are pretty much all the same and don't need a book to tell me that one can get cheated... My point is that it really is no different than anywhere else.

yes, one can get cheated anywhere...new delhi is baaad. That's why I say do your homework about fabrics, styles etc. Many of the tailors here have very good reputations and get plenty of repeat business. There are a few no-name backstreet tailors that will offer a lower price but will stick an umwitting buyer with low quality fabric. It's the same type of thing you get anywhere in the world whether you are in New York or New Delhi. There are also many very reputable jewelers here who also rely on reputation. Most of the people that get taken for fake gems probably buy from some street vendor which is fine if you want a t-shirt or a wooden elephant, but not gems...As I said above, with jewelers it is the same thing. If you obviously have no idea what you are looking at, an unscrupulous person may try to cheat you, but that will happen in any city in any country. Fools are fools and they WILL be parted with their money no matter where they are or what they are buying.
