Banishing Fleas and Mosquitoes

Banishing Fleas and Mosquitoes

Since it is the season for bugs of all kinds, I thought I’d share a way to prevent fleas and mosquitoes from bothering your pets.

Some time ago, my husband and I had a couple of show dogs. They were Akitas, the largest of the Japanese breeds. Akitas are big dogs, German Shepherd size, with a thick double coat. We took two of our critters into a groomer to get prettied up just before a local show. They asked if we wanted to give the dogs a flea bath but we told them that it would not be necessary since they did not have fleas. The groomer politely said that they would check and if they found any they would do the flea bath. I politely said that they would not find any fleas and that I would not pay for a flea bath.

A few hours later when we returned to get our dogs, the manager wanted to speak with us. She was shocked and amazed that our dogs had not fleas and she wanted to know how we could be so sure that they were flea free.

We explained that it was a matter of changing the taste of the dog’s blood. If the blood is not tasty, the critters find another host. It works for fleas on dogs and I’ve noticed also for mosquitoes on me.

The secret ingredient? . . . . . . . . Garlic – plain and simple garlic.

For the dogs we would boil rice with garlic powder (not garlic salt) and a beef bouillon cube for flavor. We had heard that brewer’s yeast works well too so we’d throw in a tablet. If you toss it all in at the beginning of the boiling process, the rice absorbs the ingredients at it cooks. We would do this about twice a week. The dogs thought they were getting a special treat and we’d get rid of any fleas.

For us, we’d just add garlic salt or garlic powder to whatever we were cooking. It always improved the taste of the meal and we never had the issues with mosquito bites that many of our friends had.

I presume it would work for ticks as well, but we don’t have a tick problem here so I can’t be sure of that.

Ever So Welcome!

Glad that I could be of some help!

Wet food may be the way to go

We live in a rural part of the county, so they have a pretty steady diet of "fresh things", including mice, wood rats, pocket gophers, and small birds. To supplement that diet, we have Iams cat kibble (because of their anti-hairball formula) available all the time. We would probably have to get canned food and add the garlic to it when they come in for the night. As you say, it is worth a shot. Thanks for the article! CLICK HERE TO JOIN XOMBA TODAY!

If you can get them to eat it!

We could never get our cats to eat the rice so I'm not sure. We had a LOT of critters at the time and could only really afford cheap dry food for the cats. We're down in numbers now though so perhaps if we mixed the garlic powder into some canned food we could get it into them. . . . . . . worth a shot anyway!

Would it work for cats too?

I can definitely see doing this for our Border Collie who spends most of his day in our backyard and is exposed to fleas and ticks. I'd rather go this route than keep buying drops that have to be given every month like clockwork. My question is does this work for cats? I know that we'd have to find another medium other than rice because our cats don't care for it. CLICK HERE TO JOIN XOMBA TODAY!
