Barack Obama faces an untested set of hurdles

For the first time in our nation's history, a major political party is on the verge of nominating an African American as its candidate for President of the United States.

Some say, race will be a big issue, and yes, there will be those who will not vote for Barack Obama based on race. But, the truth is that this will not be one of the real hurdles this candidate will face.

Questions, which may come up, especially from swing voters are; is he too young, is he too inexperienced, is he too liberal?

Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-Mo.), an early Obama backer says the big hurdles are going to be "whether Barack can avoid getting on defense on social 'wedge' issues and can stay on the offense on economic issues."

And, many polls suggest McCaskill could be correct.

The independent Pew Research Center has released a study done on McCain, and Obama, suggesting its findings show the differences between the two and how voters view each.

The study showed most voters find McCain "a centrist whose views are fairly close to their own."

Obama - the most liberal and far to the left of centerpoint of American politics. Ranked below McCain and Clinton as being tough enough for protecting America's security. He is, also, seen as an elitist, an intellectual.

But, the Pew Research Center notes, this is not a typical election year. If it were, it would be hard to see a Democratic win.
