Beer is Proof that God Loves Us...
Beer is Proof that God Loves Us...
I write this at the risk of being labeled "un-American" by some ultra-conservative freaks...but then again, I don't care.
Unfortunately our American Beers, at least the big breweries, are all, with few exceptions, pretty much tasteles, or on the other end of the scale, foul tasting (to me). No matter where you go, each country, even Germany, has their share of crappy beer, (Bier, das wie Weaselurin schmeckt), but not to the same extent.
The reason they are so popular (Miller, Bud, Coors, etc.) is that they are priced for and marketed toward the working class.
There are several great micro brews, but not widely distributed and a bit more pricey. Then, of course, we have the imports. We have our choice from a sampling of some of the world's best at any local HEB in Texas. Again, this is probably a bit pricey for the guy that just got done laying asphalt all day or working at the construction site to buy on his way home evry day. My guess is he'll go for the Bud or Miller or Coors. It's cold and it's cheap.
Personally, I'd rather pick up a six pack of Peroni, Molson or St. Pauli Girl than a twelve pack of Bud (depending on what I was in the mood for). If I find myself in the position where only domestics are available and I really want a cold beer I might choose a Michelob..if they are cold. Most likely I'll just have a "Coke" or water as beer isn't another food group for me.
I started writing a comment while reading through the many opinions on the Anheuser-Busch InBev post by Idlewild and it turned into enough to stand alone as a byte.

The big major beers are brewed to be bland, I guess because that's the type of brew most people can drink (and drink a lot... if you're guzzling a lot of brews, you might tend to drink fewer if it has a more bitter or hoppy taste). The big brews are marketed heavily, and they have a bland taste that goes down easy, especially if you're downing a lot of them. (Schaefer beer used to call itself "the one beer to have when you're having more than one.")
I don't know if I'd say the brewers make that kind of beer for the "working class," though-- my town is a major yuppie commuter town and most guys in their suits are going for the Bud, Bud Light, Coors, etc. They could definitely afford a better beer (and some do buy Corona, though to me that isn't all that tasty, especially for its import price).
I usually go for a beer that's on the cheaper side... Yuengling, Pabst, etc. Sometimes I'll splurge for Sam Adams or Heineken, or George Killian's.
Thanks for mentioning and linking to my xombyte.
P.S. Is "Weaselurin" a real word? Fantastich!
My German is a bit rusty..but I think I got that right.
You must be a Pennsylvanian. I know many guys that swear by it! Yuengling and Scrapple Sandwiches.
Is Schaefer still around? Now I've got that song in my head...thanks.
As for the yuppies; just because you wear a suit and have money, doesn't mean you have good taste.

Most of the big names produce pretty weak tasting beer.. But there are many small breweries throughout the U.S that make beers that are as good as many European brands.
A few years ago I received a case of various beers for my birthday that were brewed here, and they were all great! Unfortunately, I can't remember any of the names. :(
I agree, lots of great microbrews. I've tasted several on my travels across the country, some very good and some that just had cool labels. I'm also in the same boat because I can't remember the names. They usually have such a small distribution so you find different brands depending on the geographic area.
