On Being Both "Pro-Life" and "Pro-Choice"

On Being Both "Pro-Life" and "Pro-Choice"

In a world that is consistently perceived in black and white, at least from a political stand point, it is often frustrating to have conversations with those who can't think outside such a limited spectrum. A case in point is the issue of abortion. Why is it immediately assumed you have to either pro-life or pro-choice? Quite frankly, I believe this is an entirely ridiculous assumption. A person's personal beliefs needn't get in the way of understanding that what is right for them, isn't necessarily right for everyone.

I am not just speculating, or pulling this argument out of thin air. This comes from personal conversations with women who have shared this opinion with me. As a man, I'm not really qualified to express my own opinions on this subject, anyway. I don't have a womb, will never get pregnant, and can never comprehend the experience of carrying a fetus inside my body -- or aborting one. It's just completely out of my realm of understanding.

In a perfect world, everyone would be responsible when it came to sexual relations. They wouldn't engage in unprotected sex, not would they use abortion as a method of birth control. Of course, in a perfect world, there would also be no rape or incest. I'd be curious to know how many of the anti-abortion crowd would be willing to adopt an infant who was the spawn of siblings.

No, we do not reside in a perfect world. My idea of a perfection in this life would be to see people live their life according to the principles and beliefs and leave others to live their's as they see fit. Until a fetus is a living being outside a woman's body, it is nobody's concern but the person to whom it's attached.

Rycharde Manne if technology could

achieve perfection perhaps even the stupid and the selfish could predict the future.A dilusional thought to say the least

Bummba, where's the

Bummba, where's the dilemma? Nobody can see the future, so each decision has to be taken on its own. people are stupid and selfish. having the technology that allows them to be stupid and selfish with foetuses rather than with neonates is just a small step in harming fewer live organisms. When the technology is perfect they can be stupid and selfish and harm nothing. A great leap forward... perhaps. Money for your Thoughts - join now OWO-HP

Here's a thought

Let's say that a young married couple decides to have 2 children, concieved in love with hopes of having a boy and a girl. The first child is born a healthy boy. The second pregnancy ultrasound is a girl but shows signs that the child may have down syndrome so they decide to abort the pregnancy. They try again. The third pregnancy ultrasound is a boy so they decide to abort the pregnancy and try again. The fourth pregnancy ultrasound is 2 boys and a girl so they decide to go through with the pregnancy. As consenting adults they are prochoice. The question is, would society see this as acceptable.

pro-life is pro-death

stop using the word pro-life as it is a joke propagated by religious lunatics who are fully prepared to be anti-life when it comes to killing post-natal fully formed adults. It is a tyranny of the body, like anti-euthanasia. Money for your Thoughts - join now OWO-HP

It is a requirement

There was a time in my life that I was on welfare. I had to give the name of my children's father and the welfare department started a case with the DA for child support. Granted, they screwed up the paperwork and it took over a year, it was accomplished and his pay was garnished. The problem sometimes is that the father knows his wages will be garnished, therefore he changes jobs every three months (that is how long it takes for the authorities to track your employment down) or they work "under-the-table". Child birth, child support and men's rights of non-consensual conception, (they consent to sex, but may not consent to conception)are difficult and touchy subjects. For example, if you are told that she is on birth control and she really isn't, than you are being tricked, lied-to and manipulated and you should not have to pay for that for the next 18 years or life. On the same note, protection of conception is a responsibility of both parties. Bottom line: When in doubt, go without or at least wear a jacket! I am a controversy. MJ

Bigger Question: Should we be in charge of our own bodies?

What I find difficult to support from the side of "pro-life" is the idea that the government or any organized religious group should be able to tell me or any other "free" citizen what they can or cannot do with their own body. If someone wants to smoke, I don't have a problem with it just so long as I don't have to breathe the smoke. If someone wants to drink, I don't have a problem with it, either, just so long as I don't have to listen to drunken caterwauling at 3am or worry about getting in a DUI-caused car collision. If someone wants to do recreational drugs on their own time, I don't have a problem with it as long as it is in the privacy of their own home and their performance in public and/or at a job is not affected. The real crux of the abortion debate is whether we believe that free citizens have a fundamental right to control our own bodies. I find it ironic that a specific religious group that complains so loudly that the "heathens" are infringing on their religious freedoms are the first ones to demand that the same government infringe upon the rights of others. There should also not be "blank check" welfare

Unless we are discussing the Second Coming, a woman cannot get pregnant without a sperm donor. On the other side of what you mentioned about men getting screwed, I believe that a woman who gets pregnant and signs up for welfare should be required to name the father of the child and he should be charged for her welfare as child support. Maybe that will keep the fatherless rates down in certain inner cities that create an illegitimacy rate of over 70% for certain ethnicities. The idea that a woman can have three or more children by different fathers, out-of-wedlock, and the taxpayer be fully responsible for raising the children is beyond absurd. I understand that there are certain situations where the mother would not want the father involved, but that shouldn't be used as an excuse for unaccountable promiscuity. Good call.

Good call.

Abortions Should Be in the Same Category as "Prescription Drugs"

i.e. illegal to get without a doctor-approved need for them. ---Uncle MythMan (http://www.geocities.com/jmythh2k5) & the Xombies Help You with Money, Love, God etc. Use Your Evolved Mind & GET PAID BY SAVING THE DIALOG STARTERS!

I'm not saying one way or another....

....whether abortion is 'right' or 'wrong' - who's to say? All I know is that up to a certain point foetuses can be considered to be parasites (oh gawd, the blasphemy! >_< ) in that they display all the functions and mannerisms of such. After that certain point, they could be considered symbiotic (in that both parties benefit). I think a person is considered such at that point when they are able to survive outside of the womb on their own, with no help from the mother/host. But then you have the point in time when the foetus develops nerve endings, thus developing a sense of pleasure and/or pain.....which is, I guess, why they don't allow abortions after a certain length of pregnancy.
