On Being Both "Pro-Life" and "Pro-Choice"

On Being Both "Pro-Life" and "Pro-Choice"

In a world that is consistently perceived in black and white, at least from a political stand point, it is often frustrating to have conversations with those who can't think outside such a limited spectrum. A case in point is the issue of abortion. Why is it immediately assumed you have to either pro-life or pro-choice? Quite frankly, I believe this is an entirely ridiculous assumption. A person's personal beliefs needn't get in the way of understanding that what is right for them, isn't necessarily right for everyone.

I am not just speculating, or pulling this argument out of thin air. This comes from personal conversations with women who have shared this opinion with me. As a man, I'm not really qualified to express my own opinions on this subject, anyway. I don't have a womb, will never get pregnant, and can never comprehend the experience of carrying a fetus inside my body -- or aborting one. It's just completely out of my realm of understanding.

In a perfect world, everyone would be responsible when it came to sexual relations. They wouldn't engage in unprotected sex, not would they use abortion as a method of birth control. Of course, in a perfect world, there would also be no rape or incest. I'd be curious to know how many of the anti-abortion crowd would be willing to adopt an infant who was the spawn of siblings.

No, we do not reside in a perfect world. My idea of a perfection in this life would be to see people live their life according to the principles and beliefs and leave others to live their's as they see fit. Until a fetus is a living being outside a woman's body, it is nobody's concern but the person to whom it's attached.

Child Support

Now you got me going... I also feel that if an unmarried female chooses to have a child without the consent of the male, she should NOT be entitled to child support. The "Against religious belief" excuse for birth control or abortion is not acceptable after pre-marital sex. Todays society is so sexually focused that women lie. "Yeah, I'm on birth control." When they really are not. If women want to play they need to be held accountable for their actions as well as the man. Some men just get so screwed because of greedy, lazy women. I am a controversy. Personal Topic of Taboo

This is one of those topics that I rarely get involved with for the simple fact that I am "depends on the circumstances and person". It is hard to have conversations of such standings with politically/religiously involved people. I also have other opinions in regards to the right to choose for the man. It is in the realm of accepting personal responisibilty. I disagree with you on you not being qualified, if a male and female choose to play without protection and a pregnancy occurs, I feel that the man and woman should have to sign on the dotted line. (except in rape, incest or other non-consenting, medically dangerous situations)It may be her body, but the responisibility to maintain her body should not be after conception, but before. I bet there are a lot of men out there who would be more than happy to raise their child out of wedlock, as a single parent. Where are their right to accept responsibility for their actions? Don't men have a right to choose? Who knows, if this type of decision has to be mutual, maybe both male and female will realize sex is not just a past-time, but a true commitment to another human being. I am a controversy. MJ
