Being Taught by God Through Special Needs Students: Part Seven

In a fast pace world that we live in, it is easy to forget the important things in life and how precious life really is. I was reminded one day teaching my students with special needs what is truly important. We were reading and learning from the New Testament the Saviors ability to help us with anything and his love for us. I was impressed to ask my students,

“How do you know if Jesus loves you?”

Andy, one of my students with downs syndrome answered,

  “Because I was born!”

I must admit I was taken back. Here was one of God’s children, who by society’s standards was not “normal”, understood better than I did the meaning of God’s love. He saw his birth and life as a great blessing from God even though he had was society calls “disabilities”. A pain of guilt swept over me as I recalled the many times I’ve complained about my challenges and trials. If Andy saw his life as a blessing from God then so could I. I have tried since then to understand my life as a gift from God, even the trials, to be lived and appreciated so that I can learn what he sent me here to learn, and that perspective has made a difference for me.
