Belgian Horror: The Devil's Nightmare aka La plus longue nuit du diable (1971)
posted October 27, 2009 - 5:08amIf I say "Belgian horror", what do you say? Maybe a few of you say "Daughters of Darkness." Maybe the weird ones among you say "Rabid Grannies." But that's pretty much it. If I ask for Belgian comics, we can go on forever: Tintin,
Spirou, Gaston... But movies? And horror movies? Well, there aren't that many of them.
1971's THE DEVIL'S NIGHTMARE has a small cult following that deserves to be bigger. This cool and sexy little chiller stars Erika Blanc (who actually was the screen's first Emmanuelle, long before Sylvia Kristel, in Cesare "Gestapo's Last Orgy" Canevari's IO, EMMANUELLE aka A MAN FOR EMMANUELLE, 1969) as a sultry succubus hanging out in an old castle. A bunch of tourists ends up in the castle, and guess what happens. Yup, our hot and rather creepy succubus shows up, seduces them one by one and kills them. What did you expect?
This Belgian-Italian co-production also sports a terrific soundtrack, sounding very Italian and very 1971. How come today's horror movies never have scores like this?
