Benefits on society due to cheaper computing
posted November 29, 2007 - 1:07amI have noticed that laptop computers are getting cheaper each year, at least for the models in a similar class. Not only are they getting cheaper but they are getting more powerful too. At the time of this writing you can get a decent laptop for under $500. This would include an efficient processor of at least 1.5 ghz, a windows operating system, more than 60 gigs of storage, and more than 1 gig of ram. This is adequate for a common every day user who simply wants to surf modern web applications, do word processing, and even a little photo and video editing work.
The commodization of computer technology is great for the world. As computers get cheaper more people including lower income people can get access to helpful tools and use the Internet. This leads to a further democratization of information and a more knowledgeable electorate. That is of course if the Internet is used for constructive and self growth purposes as well.
The decentralization of information is going to improve humanity in my opinion. If nothing else if allows individuals to be more powerful and to express their opinions to a worldwide audience. Lowered computing costs will enable more people to produce products and services at a more efficient and prolific rate. Cheaper computing is taking away the power of the middle man.
