Beaches will often occur along coastal areas, where wave or current action deposits and reworks sediments. The seashore and oceanshore are the most commonly associated with beaches but beaches can also occur at the margin of the land along the lakes and rivers where sediments are deposited. The longest beach in the world is Praia do Cassino in southern Brazil which is 240 kilometres long.

The best recreational beaches are awarded Blue Flag status. This is usually based on water quality and safety provision. There are topfree beaches and nude beaches where clothing is optional or not allowed. During the hot weather season many tourists will flock into beaches and it is during such times that one will notice that the social norms are completely different from what is normal in adjacent areas.
