Best Chocolate Dipped Strawberries for Valentine's Day

Chocolate has long been considered an aphrodisiac. Modern studies have verified that chocolate does increase levels of serotonin and other mood-enhancing hormones in the brain after being eaten.

The bright red strawberry has been considered an aphrodisiac since the days of ancient Rome, when the strawberry was a symbol of Venus.

Dipping strawberries in chocolate creates a delectable dessert full of joy and symbolism. What better Valentine's Day treat to give your loved one than hand-dipped strawberries in chocolate?

Equipment and Supplies Needed

  • Double boiler
  • Cookie sheet
  • Parchment paper or wax paper
  • Wooden Spoon
  • 8 ounces semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 2 ounces vegetable shortening
  • 24 large strawberries

Making Chocolate Dipped Strawberries

  1. Have the strawberries at room temperature.
  2. Line 1 or 2 cookie sheets with either baking parchment or wax paper.
  3. Chocolate burns easily, so melt it in a double boiler. Empty the 8 ounce bag of chocolate chips into the top of the double boiler. Add an ounce of vegetable shortening. Melt over medium-high heat, stirring often.
  4. When melted, remove from heat. If the chocolate seems to thick to dip, stir in another ounce of shortening.
  5. Hold one strawberry by the hull (the green part.) Dip 2/3 of the strawberry into the chocolate.
  6. Remove, and shake very gently to remove excess chocolate.
  7. Place the berry on its side on the parchment paper.

If the chocolate gets too thick for dipping, place it back on the hot water. If necessary, reheat the chocolate over medium or low heat.

Place the cookie sheet of strawberries in the refridgerator. The best method is to dip the strawberries on the same day that you intend to serve them; but if you are unable to do that, keep the chocolated dipped strawberries refridgerated until a few hours before serving.

Allow the strawberries to warm to room temperature before serving; they are best enjoyed at room temperature.
