The best game review sites on the web

Here's a list of the game review sites on the web that I rely on to find out if a game is worth looking at.

First and foremost Game Revolution
http://www.gamerevolution.com

These guys give well thought out reviews and seem to be immune to hype.

Sometimes the style of some of the reviews can be a bit over the top but they are always amusing and very informative.

One problem is that they don't review every game out there - so you may not be able to find info on a game that you're looking for.

Here's one reason why I probably like them - if you're an old gamer like me you have probably read Zzap 64! magazine at some point. Therefore you know it was the only one that gave reliable opinions about commodore 64 games - some of the old Zzap 64! writers actually work for Game Revolution.

Gamefaqs
http://www.gamefaqs.com/

A great site for user created reviews. Sometimes fanboys of the platform and fanboys of other platforms can pollute the reviews a bit, but it always gives you a few perspectives.

Gamefaqs also has the advantage of having one of the largest collections of faqs on the internet. A really useful site to recommend to people when they get stuck in a game.

meta review sites
These are the way to go if you can't find a review for a game on Game Revolution.

The two best ones in my opinion are:

Game Rankings
http://www.gamerankings.com/

This was the first site I found that amalgamated reviews - It gives you a good overall picture of what the sites (and magazines) out there think of a game.

Metacritic
http://www.metacritic.com/

This site has the added advantage of having reviews for all sorts of other topics as well as gaming.

One fantastic use of these meta review sites is if yourself or someone you know gets a new system - just go to these sites and get the top 10 (or 20 or 50 or whatever) reviewed games for the platform and it gives you, or them, a great place to start.

So that's what I think - what you do you think? What great site should I have mentioned?
