Best way to progress in Surfing

Learning to surf is difficult enough already, to add to the confusion there are hundreds of different types, makes and sizes of boards. I started learning to surf 2 years ago and was lucky in managing to stumble upon a great starting formula.
Firstly, what board to start with? Many surf schools dish out 'foam boards' as they are easy to surf and soft (in case you knock anyone out). Whilst on your first time this may be a good option, you will probably tire of them quickly. The best thing to use is a longboard. Depending on the size of the persona and natural athletic ability, the best size of longboard will change. For lighter, shorter or more athletic people the shorter range of longboards are more suitable. Around 6ft7 to 8ft. For heavier and taller people any board over 8ft should provide enough stability to get you standing on waves quickly.
Once you have got the knack of standing up on small, perhaps broken waves it will be time to move onto something more maneuverable. At this point a board that will help you learn quickly is the fish. Again appropriate size depends on height and weight, but any type of fish board will give you enough flotation to catch waves but be small enough for to learn how to move a board around a wave!
formula for success: Longboard --> Fish-----> PRO
