Billboard Top 100 of 2006. Nothing Surprising, or Is It?
Billboard Top 100 of 2006. Nothing Surprising, or Is It?
Every year Billboard releases the Top 100 of the year. This year is no different and as always I love some and I hate some. Of course the list is completely based on mass-appeal, marketing, radio play and maybe even purchasing :) Of course with the high rate of music piracy in the world I suppose they should probably do it based on downloads or torrents instead of actual purchases for it to be more realistic.
With the standards gracing the list, Shakira, Nelly Furtado
, Beyonce
it reads like a who's who of music I don't normally listen to. But every December I like to take a peek into the American Music scene and see what's what.
This year the list contained some bands who haven't spent a lot of time in the limelight of late but who generally make a good showing every year. This year those include Bon Jovi, Madonna
, Evanescence
and Busta Rhymes
who I haven't heard anything about in some time.
On the list are also some of my favorites which will probably come as a surprise to some people that I know. These artists include Pussycat Dolls, Dem Franchise Boyz
, Black Eyed Peas
, The All American Rejects
, and Eminem
. Sure some of it is over-processed, computer mixed, shaken, balanced and colored...but in the long run it's entertaining to me and that is what it is about. Or at least it used to be. Now I think they are more interested in money and insulting each other than they are about entertaining. But really don't fool yourself, anyone who ever wanted to be a rock star wanted it for only three reasons, sex, money and fame.
This year the list contained a good number of artists that I haven't heard of before like Daniel Powter, Sean Paul
, Yung Joc
, and at least half a dozen others.
Then of course the list contains several bands that make me want to vomit and stab out my ears with dull pencils like Rascal Flatts, Hinder
, Kelly Clarkson
(who never should have won as far as I'm concerned), Nick Lachey
and Lifehouse
. Honestly I was never a fan of popular music anyway so the fact that the list of my dislikes is this long is no surprise. Actually the surprise to me is the fact that I like more on the list than I dislike.
Overall I think it's a fairly good list and it has more songs that I enjoy than last year when I was totally unimpressed with a total of maybe 25 songs on the list that I enjoyed. Of course, who am I? You might like more or less on the list but to each their own.

Respect, money and a good product are all opposing factors in the class struggle ;) I wasn't condoning piracy I was merely stating that it would probably be a more accurate way to judge the popularity. Of course with the advent of affordable legal download sites like iTunes (which I still refuse to use), eMusic, Napster (new and improved for your safety), etc... they could actually get a better idea of exactly what is popular and what is being purchased.
You said:
"Sure, some music may have been more-popular among cheapo, evil, unrespectable losers; but people with the proper amount of mone-- respect prefered the artists listed."
Let he without sin cast the first stone. You have never ever done anything illegal I take it? I don't think the issue is always the money but the lack of quality for said money. I always hated buying a full CD and then only having 4 or 5 good songs on it. It really burned me and I always said I would download music when it was less than the CD. Well now it is and I do. eMusic was great for several months. $10 a month for 40 songs. Of course not all the most popular artists but I managed to find 4 or 5 months of good stuff and I could have continued to do so if I had not moved to Europe.
As for disrespectful. Sure, I'm disrespectful because I downloaded Metallica songs illegally AFTER Lars Ulrich nearly cried in public about how poor he was, with his $3M home and the $1M recording studio in it. Yep, he sure is poor, a poor winner. No 'thanks for all those years of buying our stuff and supporting us and making us rich bastards,' just 'here's a subpeona, see you in court suckah!' I have no respect for him and I will never pay for anything that sends money to him. As a matter of fact I download their stuff, listen once and delete it...just on principal. Because I'm a cheapo disrespectful loser as you said.
Oh wait, I forgot the evil ;)
