Billboard Top 100 of 2006. Nothing Surprising, or Is It?
posted December 27, 2006 - 1:28pmEvery year Billboard releases the Top 100 of the year. This year is no different and as always I love some and I hate some. Of course the list is completely based on mass-appeal, marketing, radio play and maybe even purchasing :) Of course with the high rate of music piracy in the world I suppose they should probably do it based on downloads or torrents instead of actual purchases for it to be more realistic.
With the standards gracing the list, Shakira, Nelly Furtado
, Beyonce
it reads like a who's who of music I don't normally listen to. But every December I like to take a peek into the American Music scene and see what's what.
This year the list contained some bands who haven't spent a lot of time in the limelight of late but who generally make a good showing every year. This year those include Bon Jovi, Madonna
, Evanescence
and Busta Rhymes
who I haven't heard anything about in some time.
On the list are also some of my favorites which will probably come as a surprise to some people that I know. These artists include Pussycat Dolls, Dem Franchise Boyz
, Black Eyed Peas
, The All American Rejects
, and Eminem
. Sure some of it is over-processed, computer mixed, shaken, balanced and colored...but in the long run it's entertaining to me and that is what it is about. Or at least it used to be. Now I think they are more interested in money and insulting each other than they are about entertaining. But really don't fool yourself, anyone who ever wanted to be a rock star wanted it for only three reasons, sex, money and fame.
This year the list contained a good number of artists that I haven't heard of before like Daniel Powter, Sean Paul
, Yung Joc
, and at least half a dozen others.
Then of course the list contains several bands that make me want to vomit and stab out my ears with dull pencils like Rascal Flatts, Hinder
, Kelly Clarkson
(who never should have won as far as I'm concerned), Nick Lachey
and Lifehouse
. Honestly I was never a fan of popular music anyway so the fact that the list of my dislikes is this long is no surprise. Actually the surprise to me is the fact that I like more on the list than I dislike.
Overall I think it's a fairly good list and it has more songs that I enjoy than last year when I was totally unimpressed with a total of maybe 25 songs on the list that I enjoyed. Of course, who am I? You might like more or less on the list but to each their own.
