Birthright Citizenship Is Wrong
posted April 21, 2009 - 10:26amFacts:
300,000 to 500,000 babies are born in the US every year to illegal immigrants. Over ten years that adds up to 3 to 5 million people gaining citizenship by birth.
Now all of these babies are US citizens.
Taxpayers pay almost all the hospital bills for these births.
Illegal immigrant mothers of these babies are rarely deported.
No other European country grants birthright citizenship any more.
News roports have pointed out that businesses promote and cater to birth tourism. Birth tourism, is a term used for pregnant women taking a trip to the US just so their baby can be born in the US.
Birthright citizenship has always been a problem in our country. Largely do to a mistaken interpretation of the Constitution. The Fourteenth Amendment was passed after the Civil War in order to make clear that slaves who had been freed were US citizens. It was never put into place to cover women traveling to the US and give birth will make the child a born citizens. Therefore birthright citizenship is wrong, both practically and constitutionally.
Some may say, "Well it was born here so it does make the child an US citizens." Wrong the child was conceived in another country therefore, is the citizen of that country. Even if the mother goes on a vacation to the US one week before the due date. For example, my Aunt gave birth to a child in Germany it did not change the fact that the child was born an US Citizen.
We cannot afford to keep paying for children that are by all rights' the citizen of another country. We have our children to worry about, feeding them, providing medical care and the list goes on. Why should these children do without because a woman went on vacation and gave birth in our country?
What is your thoughts on the matter?
