The Biscuit Injury Threat Evaluation
posted September 12, 2009 - 4:21amMore than half of all Britons have been injured by biscuits according to a new survey. Injuries range from being scalded by hot tea or coffee while dunking, to breaking a tooth while eating biscuits. It is estimated that 25 million adults have been injured while eating biscuits, with 500 hospitalised.
The custard cream was the worse offender, topping a table of 15 generic biscuits whose potential dangers were calculated by The Biscuit Injury Threat Evaluation. Custard creams got a risk rating of 5.63 while Jaffa cakes were the safest biscuit at 1.16.
The survey found that almost a third of adults had been splashed or scalded by hot drinks while dunking or trying to fish remnants of collapsed biscuits. 28% had choked on crumbs and one in ten had broken a tooth of filling while biting a biscuit. More bizzarre injuries include three percent of people poking themselves in the eye with a biscuit and 7% of people who have been bitten by a pet trying to get their biscuit.
The survey also included other aspects of biscuit consumption such as dunkability and crumb dispersal and was performed by Mindlab International.
