"Blackwater" author exposes 'Black Shirts' terrorizing prisoners at Guantanamo Prison under Obama Administration

Jeremy Scahill, the author of "Blackwater: The Rise of the World's Most Powerful Military Mercenary Army", has written another excellent article at AlterNet (May 15, 2009) about the continuing human rights abuses at Guantanamo Bay Prison, this time under the Obama Administration's watch.

Anyone concerned about the necessity to preserve human rights and liberties, especially in times of war, should read and post this stark account of prisoner treatment.

Madeline, I assure you

that I have no sympathy for what ever may happen to those who actually commit a war crime. I served 22 years as an active duty Marine. I don't condone actual torture. The problem is partly semantics. To me; Torture is the intentional infliction of horrendous physical pain to gain an end. The victim is reduced to literally begging to die to make the pain go away. I simply don't see water boarding as torture in that sense. For those that do, I respect their opinion even though we disagree. And, contrary to Mr. Hersh's assertions, the military prosecutes those who they have probable cause to believe commit war crimes. Mr. Hersh himself in the speeches you linked to repeatedly clarified that these things are what he thought was happening as opposed to what he knows are happening. I am a vet, and on this Memorial Day I am lost in thought for my friends and collegues who died in the line of duty. And, while we disagree, I still cannot find much sympathy for terrorists. Have a great day Phil

BBC interview with tortured Brit detainee at Guantanamo

not good. He descibed how he lost the sight in one eye when a guard pushed a finger into his eye socket. What sort of crazed lunatic could do such a thing? The Beeb reiterated a few times, during their report concerning British collusion with American torture of British subjects, that this account is not verified. Torture of women and children

Thank you for reading this post Philip and for your comment. I must respectfully disagree. There are credible reports of abuse and torture of women and children at the hands the American government (see Seymour Hersh's speech below), cases of US soldiers raping and killing innocent civilians (before the courts today), and US-led bombings on innocent civilians still continue in Afghanistan and Iraq. I do hope that you feel sympathy for these people. If more people care, then maybe we can stop it. If you don't care about human rights for all, then who should care about human rights for you? http://www.informationclearinghouse.info/article6492.htm Seymour Hersh: "Some of the worst things that happened that you don’t know about. OK? Videos. There are women there. Some of you may have read that they were passing letters out, communications out to their men. This is at [Abu Ghraib], which is about 30 miles from Baghdad — 30 kilometers, maybe, just 20 miles, I'm not sure whether it's — anyway. The women were passing messages out saying please come and kill me because of what’s happened. And basically what happened is that those women who were arrested with young boys, children, in cases that have been [video] recorded, the boys were sodomized, with the cameras rolling, and the worst above all of them is the soundtrack of the boys shrieking. That your government has, and they’re in total terror it’s going to come out. It’s impossible to say to yourself, how did we get there, who are we, who are these people that sent us there."

Prisoners at Gitmo being

Prisoners at Gitmo being terrorized is a bit hard to believe. That they live in better conditions than the civilians in their home countries is proven. That they are better fed is proven. That they get more and better medical treatment is proven. I just can't bring myself to sympathize with those who deliberately target non-combatant women and kids.

Culprits

I haven't figured out why no one has done anything to charge the culprits. +1 http://www.xomba.com/dick_cheney_commander_chief

Interview with Jeremy Scahill - Video

For anyone who is interested, here is a video of Jeremy Scahill's interview on Democracy Now regarding the prisoner abuses. You will understand why he's so passionate about this issue once you hear some of the things that happened. It starts at about 23:50 (here): http://www.democracynow.org/shows/2009/5/19 Just before this interview, there is also an interview with Robert Draper, the journalist that broke the "Biblical Passages on Intelligence Briefings" story (starts about 12:09).

Jeremy Scahill... Is this

Jeremy Scahill... Is this the same guy that claims Blackwater is essentially a "Christian Supremacist" mercenary organization? I do believe it is. And I'm not sure of your intentions here as a writer, but I do know the agenda of alternet.org - and it is a markedly "left-wing" or "statist" one. I wouldn't lend too much credence to either of these "journalistic" frauds. Who is Publius? What is Rational Liberty? How do I join Xomba and get PAID to write?

yeah, Blackwater soldiers

yeah, Blackwater soldiers were found dead by Russians in the recent Georgia conflict - it was quickly hushed up by the corporate media. This is like going back to the Middle Ages when most conflicts in Europe were fought by mercenaries. The problem with employing freelancers was whether they could be trusted or not. Join Xomba Here

Another good read...

Hi Chris, Thanks, I'm glad people still care about these issues. Yes, Blackwater was very well researched and written. You might also find Naomi Klein's The Shock Doctrine fascinating too. And it will keep you busy all summer! Cheers, Maddie
