Blockbuster Picks Blu Ray; Bad for Gamers??

Do a Google search on blu ray vs hd dvd and the first five pages will be filled with the same content--Blockbuster favoring Blu Ray over HD-DVD. I personally feel that it's way too early to declare Blu Ray as the winner, though it certainly helps to have the nation's biggest movie rental store backing it up. The figures are somewhat misleading. Of the 1.3 million installed blu ray players, 1.2 million are PS3's. It's been said all along that the PS3 is nothing more than a Trojan horse for blu ray. The installed base of stand alone blu ray players and hd dvd players are pretty much equal, as are the sales of hd dvd's and blu ray discs. To include the PS3 in the total count of sold blu ray players means that the attach rate of blu ray movies to blu ray players is only one to one, as opposed to the 4 to 1 attach rate for HD DVD. Figures could be deceiving. But I could care less for the format wars, my concern as a gamer, is the quality of games in the future should blu ray emerge as the winner. That could mean that the PS3 will have a boost in sales and turn the tables on the Xbox 360. I'm not a fanboy but it's no secret to any serious gamer that as a gaming machine, the Xbox 360 is superior to the PS3. All the games that have come out for both systems around the same time look and play better on the Xbox 360. What I'm afraid of is to have nothing to play but mediocre games for a machine that Sony NEVER truly intended for games, but to promote blu ray. Naturally if Blu Ray wins and the PS3 starts selling like crazy, developers will have little choice but to create more games for the inferior PS3 and ignore the Xbox 360. As a gamer, I'll have no choice but to buy a PS3 and settle for mediocre titles, should the Xbox 360 fade quietly into the sunset. However, that scenario is unlikely. In the videogame industry, both systems are likely to reach the finish line. Blu Ray will keep the PS3 afloat, while the 360's overall superiority when it comes to videogames will keep it on the market until the next next-gen era. It is also interesting to see how Gamecrazy, a dedicated videogame retailer and Hollywood Video affiliate, reacts to this. Hollywood Video is Blockbuster Video's biggest competitor, and for Gamecrazy to use Blu Ray as a selling point for the PS3 is essentially to promote Blockbuster. I can't imagine Gamecrazy trying to sell a PS3 and remind customers that their local Blockbuster will be renting out a bunch of Blu Ray movies in the near future. There are three main solutions to this conflict of interest. First, Hollywood Video can put it all on the line by backing HD-DVD and play chicken with Blockbuster. It can also jump on the Blu Ray bandwagon and quickly end the format war, at the same time sacrificing their Xbox 360 market. The third solution, which will be my choice, is to give equal support to both Blu Ray and HD-DVD, thereby keeping both formats alive and at the same time leaving Blockbuster in the dust. In the meantime I'd like to see how the HD DVD camp retaliates in the upcoming days or weeks.
