Blogging the Bible: What's Really in the Good Book
posted November 9, 2006 - 2:38am

Does the title sound familiar at all? If you have ever perused through slate.com I doubt you could have missed it. This regular blog and podcast by David Plotz is one of the more popular features of the site. The entire point of his articles seem to be to try and make the Bible look as bad as possible.
He's doing a good job too. Well, at least you would think so if you have never read the Bible for yourself or worse, listened to a Bible scholar or pastor.
The funny thing about Plotz's articles is that he isn't pointing out anything that any Christian doesn't know. One of the latest Bible characters that Plotz is targeting is King David, who wrote much of the book of Psalms and killed the giant Goliath when he was just a boy. Plotz is apparently uncovering the truth about David, pointing out that he was not only maritally unfaithful but also committed murder. Mocking the Bible and claiming this is "homicide in pursuit of family values".
If Plotz had ever looked at what he was reading without a cynic's attitude, he would realize that David's actions were not condoned by God in any way. Quite the opposite in fact; David's actions eventually destroyed him and his whole family.
The truth is that Plotz has not uncovered a conspiracy to hide this information. In fact you can read it for yourself in 2 Samuel, beginning in chapter 11 - or just click here.
If nothing else, Plotz proves that it is important for people to make their own decisions and not simply listen to the opinions and view points of others. There will always be people who disagree, especially with religion - listen to both sides and then go to the source and really become informed before making a decision, don't just take some blogger's word for it.
