Blogging the Bible: What's Really in the Good Book

Does the title sound familiar at all? If you have ever perused through slate.com I doubt you could have missed it. This regular blog and podcast by David Plotz is one of the more popular features of the site. The entire point of his articles seem to be to try and make the Bible look as bad as possible.

He's doing a good job too. Well, at least you would think so if you have never read the Bible for yourself or worse, listened to a Bible scholar or pastor.

The funny thing about Plotz's articles is that he isn't pointing out anything that any Christian doesn't know. One of the latest Bible characters that Plotz is targeting is King David, who wrote much of the book of Psalms and killed the giant Goliath when he was just a boy. Plotz is apparently uncovering the truth about David, pointing out that he was not only maritally unfaithful but also committed murder. Mocking the Bible and claiming this is "homicide in pursuit of family values".

If Plotz had ever looked at what he was reading without a cynic's attitude, he would realize that David's actions were not condoned by God in any way. Quite the opposite in fact; David's actions eventually destroyed him and his whole family.

The truth is that Plotz has not uncovered a conspiracy to hide this information. In fact you can read it for yourself in 2 Samuel, beginning in chapter 11 - or just click here.

If nothing else, Plotz proves that it is important for people to make their own decisions and not simply listen to the opinions and view points of others. There will always be people who disagree, especially with religion - listen to both sides and then go to the source and really become informed before making a decision, don't just take some blogger's word for it.

School's out

Ha ha ha. I totally forgot about Summer School - that is truly an American classic. Jokey Smurf? Hmmm, well I guess I can see a resemblance. :)

Hey, a comparison to Mark Harmon can't be all that bad...

"Summer School," bay-beeee!

Antonia Dwells

there's plenty in the bible

there's plenty in the bible to cause modern readers to gasp in horror, avert their eyes, or just plain confound. i don't see how anyone who actually studies the bible can remain a christian, actually. but having said that, i hate people who act like they know something no one else does when in fact they don't know squat, and david plotz certainly falls into that category. (lord knows i've been guilty of this, and strive hard not to have that attitude. doesn't always work, but at least i do try.)

Revenge

Chansen, or Jokey Smurf? [img_assist|nid=4721|title=Chansen|desc=|link=none|align=left|width=100|height=100] [img_assist|nid=4723|title=Jokey Smurf|desc=|link=none|align=right|width=76|height=100]

Thats funny

Come to think of it Idle, I don't think I've ever seen either one of them...ever. Well at least not in living flesh. But you might be on to something.

Do we know for sure

that Joe and Mark are two different people? I mean, have any of us seen them together? Maybe "Joe" is really just Mark taking a break from TV and movies, doing the low-key singer/songwriter thing.

I'm relieved

The more I thought about it, the more I was worried that you would be ticked off that I posted your picture. Seeing as how I don't really know you, it was kind of a risk. Well I'm glad you thought it was funny anyway. I guess you could always post my picture next to one of those dorks from the Blue-Man Group. Ha. I gotta get rid of this Smurf in a hurry.

Which one is Joe?

Ha! just to show you I can take a joke, go ahead and leave it in there. What have I got to lose? Isn't he an ex-QB? I think it's hilarious. About the Onion, I wouldn't recommend it to everybody; I wanted to make the point that I'm not over-sensitive about religious satire. But this Slate series you wrote about, I agree it seems like overkill. How funny can it be after a while? Yippee, let's see how much we can disrespect the bible, week after week.... www.joesnare.com

Onion?

Joe- I have heard of the Onion, but I don't believe I have ever read it. Thanks for the comment, I just thought is was important to point this out to some readers. Oh and by the way, I checked out your site. I couldn't help but notice a striking similarity between one of your photos and Mark Harmon from NCIS. I thought I would share... Since I didn't ask permission, I can take this down if you don't like it. Just let me know. I just thought it was kind of funny.

The truth is...

Good post, I find this very reasonable and well-written. I'm not one of those who claims to "take the bible literally," and I believe Jesus could take a joke -- I'm also a regular Onion reader, just to let you know where I stand -- but after skimming the Slate article you referenced, I agree. It seems like nothing more than a series of sophomoric put-downs, all cleverness and no good purpose. I give you a lot of credit for avoiding all the "absolutes and superlatives" that I recently accused another Xombie of. You kept a cool head, made your point, and I learned something from it. www.joesnare.com
