The Blue Screen of Death

The Blue Screen of Death

I have had to go to my happy place. My computer at home crashed two days ago but not before giving me a screen that "apologized" for the inconvenience and that Microsoft XP has encountered blah blah and that DLL something something was corrupted. The screen went black and then came back up in an electric blue color where it remains today, stuck on the blue screen of death.

I sat there for awhile, not really believing that good ole Dell-y was dead. But alas. Three techie friends have tried and failed to revive it, Dell tech support couldn't save it and the clerk at Best Buy could just nod his head in empathy at my story while gently telling me they didn't have the rebooting CDs that I needed. I'm pretty sure the staff at Best Buy train for these def-con customer meltdowns because oddly enough, I left the store feeling better.

So in the meantime, I'm shopping around for a laptop but I'm shocked and awed by current pricing. I'm going to have to suck it up, though, because I can only log on to Xomba at lunch time at the library and that's just not enough! Wish me luck!

@kjhack, my computer may be back up

before the end of the weekend (crossing my fingers). My husband has spent about 4 straight days with the machine's guts spilled out on the floor, phone glued to his ear and a wild look in his eye. He got it all back except we're having a driver problem so he's working on the last part. In the meantime, should I tell him I ordered a laptop??? I'll use the "it's for the kids" routine, ha ha. :) Peace, Mia NW Please visit my recent posts here Get paid to be a xombie! Join us here

Yeah, it's the memory that

Yeah, it's the memory that sucks the most on these older computers. Mine is just 512 MB, as compared to the 2 Gigs that is standard today. To be honest, my 20 Gig hard drive seems to be adequate for me. I'll look forward to that byte. I may look into putting one together myself, this year, and I'll need all the help I can get. :)

I'm kind of in the same boat, kjhack

When my wife upgraded to a new laptop a couple of years ago, I took over her 2001 Gateway desktop. Even with maxing out the memory (640 MB is all the motherboard will recognize), installing a new hard drive (the MB is limited to 127 Gigs of my 250 Gig hard drive, which means the rest is unavailable to me period), and running Windows XP, the computer seems to be relying more on the cache space on my hard drive than its own memory to keep things above a standstill. Fortunately, I am going to be buying a new barebones system on ebay today and moving my drives over to it. The nice thing about a barebones system is I can get what I need to upgrade the technology that is most dated and keep the more expensive components intact. I may do a Xombyte about the hows and whys as soon as I complete the transition, since this is the second computer I will have put together from barebones. XOMBA VISITORS GET IN FREE--CLICK HERE

Sorry to hear your puter

Sorry to hear your puter croaked on you, Mia. I suspect I may be in the same boat before too long. I'm running a 2001 Dell Optiplex GX100, believe it or not. It's still plugging along, though. ↑ Grab this Headline Animator

I'll need it jdubhub,

I wouldn't remotely know how to assemble a new one so kudos to you! I guess now every family should have a doctor, lawyer, car mechanic and computer tech! Peace, Mia NW Please visit my recent posts here Get paid to be a xombie! Join us here

Good luck, Mia

I know how it feels to have a computer keel over under the BSOD. I am actually getting ready to put another computer together from a barebones kit (tower, motherboard, CPU, memory) with the other parts that are still usable from my current computer. Good luck to you, Mia. I remember using the library computer before I had my own--not lots of fun.
