Bobby Fischer the Chess Legend Dies at Age 64

Bobby Fischer was the first US-born World Chess Champion. He became a grand master at age 15. He became world champion after defeating Spassky in 1972 in Iceland.

Apart from being famous for chess, he was also well-known for his strange behaviour. He had lived like a recluse in recent years. He renounced his American citizenship and had lived in Iceland since 2005, and he often made anti-US remarks. He said the US was one of the “allies of evil”.

In 1992 he played a rematch against Spassky in Yugoslavia. He became a wanted man as the US charged him with breaking international sanctions imposed on that country.
