Booed Teen Anna Grant to Get Royal Treatment from Patriots

Booed Teen Anna Grant to Get Royal Treatment from Patriots

The high school freshman who got booed at an Indianapolis Colts playoff game will be an honored guest at the New England Patriots' game this weekend against the San Diego Chargers.

At halftime of the Colts-Chargers game this past weekend, the NFL introduced the winners of the league's annual Punt, Pass & Kick skills competition, which involves young people from all over the country. The winning entrants, who wear the jersey of their favorite team, are introduced and applauded by the fans.

But Anna Grant, the girls winner in the 14 to 15-year-old age group, was booed by the Indianapolis crowd--because the New Hampshire resident was wearing the jersey of the Colts' archrival Patriots.

Patriots fans and even team owner Robert Kraft vented their fury on TV, in the newspapers, and on countless blogs at the treatment of the 15 year old. Not surprisingly, it was Anna Grant who had the most realistic attitude toward the matter. She was warned by her friends that she'd probably get booed in Indianapolis, and she even smiled when she heard the boos. “It really didn’t bother me at all,” she was quoted as saying. “People at the game came up to me afterward and said, ‘It’s not you. It’s your jersey.”’

Whatever it was, Kraft has given Anna Grant, her parents, and her two brothers free tickets to the AFC Championship game this Sunday. And Anna Grant will be recognized before the game.

Grant said that she got a lot more attention because she was booed: ESPN did a piece on her, and she appeared on a few New England radio stations a few days after the game.

I definitely think Anna Grant is worthy of being honored: not just for winning the Punt, Pass & Kick, but for keeping the booing incident in perspective when so many adults are busy jeering, yelling, and screaming.

Just win, baby!

I'm old enough to remember when the Raiders team was as fearsome on the field as as its fans' costumes were in the stands. Back when John Madden was known as a coach rather than as a TV commentator (or a video game). Back when Los Angeles had an NFL team.

Good for her!

I remember her being booed during halftime. I even commented to my wife that she was booed because of the Patriots jersey. I'm glad that the Patriots organization is taking care of her. Still, just being booed is a far cry better than if, say, she was wearing a Broncos jersey at halftime at the Oakland Coliseum. Of course, for this to have taken place in Oakland at halftime last Saturday, the Raiders would have to have made the playoffs, which is about as likely to happen as George Bush to enlist for Iraq duty.
