Book review - Books of Blood Vol II by Clive Barker.

Books of Blood Vol II by Clive Barker.

As the first one in the volume, this book comprises of five short stories as well.
Dread
This one is the best of the lot. It was scarier than any other story i have read. Just the detail made my head spin. This one is about two major characters who are into philosophical debates at their college. One of them Quaid, is experimenting on people and their fears. Dread he calls it. When he traps Stephen in his isolated home and makes him come across his fear of deafness. Stephen looses it and forgets everything beyond that point in his childhood when had that accident. The way this is done reminds me of Jigsaw and they could have been influenced from this story. In the end Quaid is killed by Stephen, Ironically in the same way his nightmares have been taking place.

Hells Event
This story is close to me for instead of the psych horror in the one above, this goes for the primitive satanic horror and the story includes running. There is a race in London in which the creatures of Hell have their guy running. Joel is the fav to win after his recent Olympic victory. He has the courage and the confidence to win it but midway he sees one of the runners give up and almost wither before help arrives. Hears another praying and another literally dies on the race track, bleeds from his pores.
His dad finds out what is going on and is killed before he can stop the race. Unexpectedly the lead character is killed by the devils own, few feet from the finish line, the underdog wins and the devil takes its revenge on the Member of the Parliament who was their man and the organizer.

Jacquline Ess: Her Will And Testement
This one goes back to psych horror department. Jackie Ess is killing herself when the story begins. She has some kind of power over flesh and she can kill anyone by just her mind. She kills her husband. Finds her husbands friend, Oliver who is also a lawyer and makes love with him. The story becomes this man's testimonial till the climax. She leaves him too and finds another powerful man, Titus since she wants to learn to control her power at this point in the story. Kills him and in the end unexpectedly finds Oliver, both of them die in their intercourse. This story could have been much better if the character Jackie had some more background.

The Skins of The Fathers
Clive Barker is a clever writer as i mentioned earlier. This one has a lot of christian themes and could have been introduced since the story is about devils and mostly creatures of the underground. This is about Devils procession seen by a guy called Davidson who literally shits his pants in the desert. Goes off on foot to the nearest town which has had its brush by then. Narrates his story to them and they want to kill the Devils by big guns. They are in pursuit of their child, the story behind that is what i don't want to tell you. It ends with a fight and most are stuck in the ground when the ground gives way. What happens to them is left to the imagination

New Murder in the Rue Morgue
This one goes for the monster horror. It is a tribute to Poe can be safely said by looking at the title of the story. Lewis is the main character who is in Paris trying to get his friend Philippe out of jail, for the apparent murder of a teenage girl. Lewis's story has inspired Philippe to train an ape to see if he can act human and actually love another human. The ape kills the girl and tries to kill Lewis and their friend Catherine too. The ending was bizarre and least expected, since Lewis is offered to make love to a girl by the ape. After the act he actually dies by jumping in the river.

Barker

Yes, I have to agree Clive Barker is the best. Even Stephen King said .. "Clive Barker is the new face of Horror". Books of Blood are and excellent read. I was lucky enough to have him sign "The Hellbound Heart" and "Imajica" many years ago at a signing.
