Book Review- Books Of Blood Volume I by Clive Barker.

Books Of Blood Volume I - Clive Barker.

One thing that I have to mention first hand is that this book will scare you. It scared me, and I have been reading so much horror fiction lately, haven't been scared like this. It does scare in parts though, since the stories are written in form of short stories, completely unrelated to each other.
The Books of Blood are a series of 6 novels and this one is made of 5 stories arising out of one main introductory story.
Firstly about the writer, Clive Barker is a clever writer for he dabbles with all types of horror in this book, for example you can find Blood and gore, Satanic horror, Ghost and spirit horror, Undead type horror and Monster horror in the five stories, respectively. As I said earlier it works in parts but it definitely works. I will probably be biased when judging the last story though with characters being gay and all.
Undoubtedly though the other stories are brilliant to say the least. Especially the one that seems slow and boring initially, 'Starshine' story, turns around and grabs you completely and unexpectedly. I mean that is the best of the lot. The first one 'Midnight meat train' is also on the same level but the blood and gore is actually too much. Too much of a good thing can be bad too. 'The Yattering' was nothing to brag about. 'Pig Blood' was much better and the reason why it tends to be scary is because of the plot per se. 'The hills, the cities' was a story that i would have rated high if it didn't have the gay theme, which was totally unnecessary, but this one is quite satirical since the way the story is, I think the ending hints at something very dark. Mick is the one who is the sensitive of the two and readers would expect him to feel sad when his partner dies, instead he doesn't even notice that his partner is dead when he embraces the giant. This could hint that gay culture has to accept the rules of the majority(giant) if it has to survive.
This is what I would tell gay people, Snap out of it, you can't fight nature, no matter how much you wanna rebel, your body looks good with the opposite sex. That's just my opinion.
One scene that is particularly disturbing is the scene in the first story 'Midnight Meat Train' the character Kaufman before meeting the killer is trying to escape and the lights go out. He takes a fall on the hung corpse with the entrails out and he gets his finger in the vertebrae actually. Man I could feel like I was there and god knows how is controlled throwing up!!!
