I served ten years in one of those branches...

Actually, it was the Navy and I was on active duty from 1986 to 1996. Historically, the military lost sight of its mission when the War Department (purposeful in name) became the Department of the Army under the aegis of the National Military Establishment aka Department of Defense (namby pamby we're-not-in-it-to-win-it weasel words) in 1949. How many wars has the US military won since 1949, not counting the unresolved Gulf War I which morphed into the morass in Iraq?
