BREAKING: Sarah Palin to Step Down as Alaska Governor Within Weeks
posted July 3, 2009 - 2:45pmIn a surprise move, Alaska governor Sarah Palin has decided not to run for re-election and will actually step down as governor within a few weeks.
Sarah Palin made the announcement at a news conference on July 3rd, with her family standing behind her. She did not take questions from reporters after making the announcement. She said that she will transfer power to her lieutenant governor, and promised a smooth transition. As for her own plans, Palin simply said that she felt she could be "more effective outside government."
She compared herself to the former basketball point guard that she was, and said it was "time to pass the ball for victory." She mentioned several times that she was disappointed with the "blood sport" in politics.
Palin was the Republican vice presidential candidate on the ticket with John McCain last year. It has been widely believed that she is considering making her own run for the White House in 2012.
