Breeding ghost shrimp

Breeding ghost shrimp is a very easy project to do, and very inexpensive. You need a 10 gallon aquarium, some structure such as rocks and logs, and of course your started shrimp. Almost all pet stores sell these creatures as food for fish.

Set your aquarium up with many places to hid. Ghost shrimp like to hide in things. Purchase a dozen ghost shrimp from your local pet store. If possible see if the employee will give you a couple that already have eggs. Ghost shrimp are transparent so you can see the ones that have eggs. Acclimate the shrimp to their new home. Ghost shrimp will breed on there own without any outside influence. They also breed about every month. You have 2 options once you get some females with eggs. You can remove the females and put them in another container until they release the eggs, or you can make sure you have plenty of hiding spots, and well feed shrimp, otherwise they will eat the babies. You will have more survival rate if you remove the females. Once the babies hatch you need to fee them fish food that had been crushed into very tiny pieces. You can do this with your fingers by pinching the food several times.

Why would you want to breed ghost shrimp? You can use them to feed other animals such as Oscars or other aggressive fish. You may also want to breed them as a project for your kids.
