Brian Giles traded? Is Red Sox claim only an ambush against Giles?

The Boston Red Sox have called veteran San Diego Padres Right Fielder, Brian Giles, off of the waiver wire, according to a report from The San Diego Union Tribune. The Red Sox have a 48-hour time period during which the have all rights to trade Giles - in which they are in now.
Giles will not be playing today's Padres vs. Mets game, however manager Bud Black said that is is just an average day off of the job for Giles.
The Tribune talks about their idea that the Red Sox may have thrown in the claim to zoom in on Giles and keep him from making it to the Tampa Bay Rays. If the Padres and the Red Sox aren't able to work some sort of solution out, San Diego can then recieve Giles. The Union Tribune says in it's report that Giles' contracts has listed the Red Sox as one out of ten teams he can deny as a trade destination.
San Diego is 44-70, which is the very last place in the National League West.
