Bridge the Generation Gap

Bridge the Generation Gap

2
points

1. Our children do think that their parents are obsolete and are not fit enough to understand the requirements of the present generation. This is almost true many times with us, because we keep remembering our past and tend to treat our children the way our parents treated us while bringing us up.

2. It has to be clearly understood that today’s children are in the age information and modernized world which has resulted into they being surrounded by so many new things such as flashy cars, internet, different modes of entertainment, convenient communication, omnipresent media etc. Today nothing happening in the world is hidden from them, whether we would like them to know about these things or not.

3. Today’s world therefore requires a different style of parenting for new age children. The approach has to be friendly, flexible and innovative. The parents have to become friends of the children to win their confidence to become child’s most trusted and reliable friend. This is required to ensure that children are able to address all their doubts and clarification with open mind to parents. This ensures that they get easy, ideal and reliable solutions to their problems, it also ensures that you know what your child is going through. It surely will take sometime for them to develop confidence in their parents to give them the role of a trusted friend. This role is required to be very tactfully entered and handled to ensure complete transition from parent to friend, if you are able to do it your child will automatically be in safe hands.

4. Another important thing is that the barriers of age are to be removed, while we advise them. The information should start flowing from parent’s side on the aspects that you think are relevant to them at a particular age. The information on so called negative topics such as drugs, sex, clubs etc. should also be passed on to children with the advantages and disadvantages of each, so that they are able to take right decision on any aspect.

5. Most important don’t get surprised at their knowledge level when they open up with you, as they say child is father of man. It may be the case many time, they may know more then parents on some no-no topics.

6. The above listed tips may also ensure that the gap in the generation is considered narrower by children and parents be accepted more willingly in the present form.

Nice post +1. Parenting can be a tedious job and even more so in this day and age when the kids are so "smart". Much smarter than what we ourselves were at that age.
It can be very difficult at times to draw that thin line between being a "friend" and yet being a "parent" who is in control.
But yes, I do agree on one thing, that the generation gap has narrowed a bit. However, life is nothing but a vicious cycle, like the song in LION KING : "The Circle of Life".
And the song by Celine Dion : "Life will Go On And On"
