Bridging Digital divide in India
posted January 29, 2007 - 5:50amBridging the digital divide is a big challenge for a country like India where the regional disparities are quite rampant. It is now slowly realised that digital revolution can not take place unless and until the benefits of technology are disseminated to the rural areas. The Government is showing great commitment to spread internet connectivity in the rural areas, and it is encouraging the international developmental agencies to start pilot projects in the rural areas. The cooperatives and non-profit organisations are the beat agencies to bridge the digital divide as these are the organisations which have a strong grass-roots experience, and they have strong affiliations with the community in which they operate. In the recent years the cooperatives have played a big role in bridging the digital divide in India, and in this respect,IFFCO,a global cooperative is playing a pioneering role. The information kiosks set up by IFFCO in the rural areas are proving highly beneficial to the farmers who are getting all the correct information for their farming practices at a single point.Similarly, the cooperative dairy sector is also playing an importnat role in bridging the digital divide.India is the largest producer of the milk in the world, mainly due to the hard work of the dairy cooperatives. For example,in Banas dairy under the aegis of Gujarat Coopertative Milk Marketing Federation, each villahe has one information kiosk, which is the single point of contact for internet and other e-governance activities for the cooperative.Official forms, rural jobs, veterinary agriculture, matrimonial details, local market prices, etc are provided at the information kiosk so that people do not have to travel all the way to the district headquarters for these information. In Warana Bazar,a successful coop consumer store in rural Maharashtra, the use of ICT by the villagers has led to increase in sugar production. There are various examples of this type which clearly indicate that a silent revolution is on in the rural areas for bridging the digital divide.
