Bring Back the Major
posted September 18, 2006 - 3:39pmOnce upon a time, when I was an undergraduate at UT, there brewed a quarterback controversy. Mack scratched his head: should he play Applewhite - or should he start Simms instead? Well Major got hurt and Chris got to start, and he looked good, he looked like the recruit every Longhorn fan cried over. It would be Phil Simms' son that would bring UT fame and glory once more - restore the luster that only Darrell K. had brought before. And so it went. Chris had a gun for an arm and he won all the games he was supposed to - against Rice, against Houston, against Baylor. Then when we got to OU, Major Applewhite was ready to play. But the former Big 12 player of the year sat on the bench while the heralded sophomore played. But then came the picks and the hit heard around Burnt Orange country. In the OU end zone, I'll never forget the image of Roy Williams jumping over the offensive line, sacking Simms, causing a fumble and creating an OU touchdown. Never never never. Later that season, Simms choked again in the bowl game. Major came off the bench to bring the Longhorns back. We almost won the game despite Chris Simms' efforts to lose it.
And now, Simms starts for Tampa Bay. He's the future of TB. He's still the same big tall prototypical quarterback with a laser rocket arm. He's still got the big expectations. And above all, he's still overrated. He still makes bad decisions. He still chokes. And he still can't win games against worthy opponents. After an 0-2 start and a TD to INT ration of 0:6, Simms will return to the place he belongs... on the bench.
