Britain Braced for a Summer of Rage

Britain Braced for a Summer of Rage

Police are preparing for a “summer of rage” as victims of the economic downturn take to the streets to demonstrate against financial institutions, the Guardian has learned.

Britain’s most senior police officer with responsibility for public order raised the spectre of a return of the riots of the 1980s, with people who have lost their jobs, homes or savings becoming “footsoldiers” in a wave of potentially violent mass protests. Actually, the Guardian is running a poll on this and as of writing it stands at 69% of people saying they will demonstrate in one way or another. The authorities are being typically disingenuous to suggest that this is going to be a disenfranchised minority.

There are public riots taking place in many countries that are just not getting reported - surprise! The ones in Greece, France and Iceland are just the most visible signs that if people can actually organise themselves that they can create change. Riots by themselves without a clear aim only serve to harden governments and their military. But if the men in suits and uniforms lose control then people best know how to protect themselves.

The British seem in general too comfortable and lethargic to mount a revolution, but the police know very well how they lost control of the poll tax riots in Whitehall during Thatcher's reign. They are preparing themselves for organised revolt. That is sure to guarantee a confrontation.

28 Weeks Later

Absolutely right. Britain seems to be the world's experiment as a prison - more so than the USA. As an island it is easier to control too. Riots never happen spontaneously - indeed revolutions are never accidents. It really depends on what brains are behind it. In the most Orwellian extreme this could all indeed be "organised" by authority moles. It does seem that just putting these news warnings out is encouraging protests. We also have "28 Weeks Later" as a graphic example of what the authorities will do to "save the nation". I don't approve of putting many people in peril. Lots of hit-and-run events are far more effective. If I was doing it I'd take out as much surveillance as possible a few days before. Riot control has come a long way since the 1980s. There are now many ways to stop a crowd dead in its tracks. The physics is not actually that difficult and the same equipment would be easy to build :-) The whole universe is made of frequencies, including the authorities. But then again I'm not running it. Protesting in a Surveillance Society

I'd say that we are going to be in for a long summer anyway worldwide, since summer heat seems to bring out higher emotions in many people. What makes this story interesting for me is the fact that Britain has become an Orwellian surveillance society and the people who will be participating in the protests, who have legitimate beefs with their government, are going up against it. I am reminded by a laboratory and rats in a maze. It's almost as if the government (or those behind it) have manipulated the situation in order to get people to protest so scientists in white coats can sit behind video screens to evaluate the protesters and how effective various police riot control measures are under different circumstances. It's a given that anyone participating is going to be videotaped for the database--all governments do it--but I don't think it will end there.
