Britney Spears, Lindsey Lohan, and Why we Need to Back Off!
Britney Spears, Lindsey Lohan, and Why we Need to Back Off!
Week after week, and headline after headline, we are seeing our "heroes" implode like an out of control asteroid striking the sun. It seems there is no end in sight to the antics, and we eat it up with a spoon. Like an addicted heroine addict, we read the headlines and search the web, all while flipping the channel looking for the newest thing to happen. We discuss it at the water cooler at work, and pass judgment from our high and mighty moral tower. As we do, we are feeding the cycle all over again.
What did Lindsey Lohan do to become popular? As I recall she started out innocently enough with her affiliation to Disney, as did Britney Spears. They were both kids that were in entertainment. They both had parents on the scene. They both decided to advance their careers by using sexuality at much to young of an age.
It then graduated to the "me" syndrome that hits so many of these young performers wheny they get to much to soon. Finally, here we are in a world for them which includes drugs, drinking, DUI's, jail, and nervous breakdowns for kids. While Spears and Lohan have not both been involved in all of these things, they both have sampled the list in various forms. How can this be?
By continuously focusing on every movement of these kids, they have become larger than life, in their circles and in their minds. They are given special treatment wherever they go, and expect it in the strangest places.
Rehab is now fashionable, and going in and coming out is a festival. There we are, taking a very serious situation that means possible life and death for this misguided soul, shooting pictures, and trying to get a reaction.
Each and every one of us perpetuate this behavior by buying the CD's, and magazines, and scooping up every bit of news like vultures. We need to grow up ourselves, and give them the space to realize that they are not special any more than we are. Let them face reality, and come out better for it.
In our culture, reality is often skewed, and these kids do not have the maturity to understand that at a core level.
Britney Spears and Lindsey Lohan are real people with some very real addictions that need some real help. Not a posh sudo-therapy getaway so that they can escape reality. Reality is what put them in the position they are in, and only reality and facing some tough truths about themselves will save them.
If we perpetuate that mirage for them, then we are going to have a terrible tragedy again grace our nation. Let us not forget others before them that never got that awakening and now sleep forever more.
