Bush Wants Moratorium on Oil Drilling Lifted

Bush Wants Moratorium on Oil Drilling Lifted

Bush and McCain want to lift the moratorium on drilling in ANWR, the Gulf of Meico, and along the coasts. This is in response to our present energy crisis. I think Obama is right in saying we can't drill our way out of this mess. Bush says there's 10 years worth of oil, others say 2 1/2 years. No matter, the time it will take to get to it, even if we find all that's promised, will not solve many problems. Oil prices are determined on the world market. If the demand is high the price will be high and the oil we will find won't change that much. For Bush and McCain it's really the same old stuff. It'll minimally solve problems in the long term and do nothing in the short term. Anyway, you could find all the oil you want, but without refining capacity it'll just sit there. If your refiners can only refine 100 barrels of oil, having 200 barrels isn't going to matter.

But I have a question I'd love an answer to. From what I've heard, oil companies have 10,000 leases to drill for oil on 68 million acres. Why aren't they drilling there before asking to have the moratorium lifted? The CEO of Diamond Drilling has even said his comapny took 30 rigs out of the Gulf of Mexico to use in drilling in other parts of the world. I suspect it's because it's easier making money elsewhere, but why not do your drilling here first?

Conservation

Practicing conservation would be a good start... not just in driving and saving, but in electricity use, etc. I know plenty of people who seem environmentally concerned, but they leave every light in their house on, even in rooms they haven't been in for hours. There's a lot of waste in daily life... electricity, water, packaging, etc.... if people were just aware of it and paid attention, this could be a big savings nationwide. People are so used to not even giving this stuff a second thought.

Alternatives to Drilling for Oil in Alaska

The decision to drill for oil that is available off shore should be left to the states bordering the drilling sites. If clear-headed reasoning prevails, no state would take the risk of a major oil spill ruining beach tourism and fishing for a few years (remember the Exxon Valdez). The Alaskan oil reserves in the ANWR, on the other hand, should be kept off limits to greedy oil companies (and consumers). Policies should be developed to encourage development of alternatives to our continued preference for low mileage SUV's. CAFE mileage standards are just a start. Plug-in hybrids may prove to be just the thing. I am looking forward to seeing if the Chevy Volt is all that GM is promising.
