Business speak at home, or not

Business speak at home, or not

Why is work life so different from home life?  I can't be the only one who notices this and ponders it; can I?

I have worked my way up from entry level positions to a middle management level, so I've proven over time that I can make the right decisions to get the job done and I believe that I have exceptional people skills--at work.

Why don't those people skills from work carry over to home?  Whenever I try to have a conversation at home and I accidently throw in a "business" word, such as; mediate or active listening, I get told that I'm not supposed to use those words at home.  WHY?  They work well when discussing issues at work.

People tend to accept the fact that there are words that encourage good dialogue (another business word) when at work, but don't want to dialogue at home.  They want to talk, discuss, tell, yell or shout, but they don't want to dialogue.  Personally, I think some dialogue might make home life a little easier and I'm certain that there are families out there right now who are happily engaged in dialogue as a normal part of life, my home just isn't one of them.

I'm not saying that I need to be the boss at home.  I don't even consider myself the boss at work, though technically I am.  I just enjoy using good solid conversation and listening skills when I am working with people in the workplace.  I try to do that at home too, but for some reason the passion level changes in a household and suddenly good listening and open conversation falls by the wayside.

You know what?  I don't think I would have it any other way.  It's easy to say that I want everything at home to go as smoothly as at work, but I'm not sure that that would be any fun at all.  I don't want to live in a business environment all the time, nor do I want to live in a home environment all the time.  This is why I'm glad that I have a place to call work and a place to call home.  I don't think I would be cut out for the "home office" set up that others seem to enjoy.

Home vs Work Communication styles

Please tell me you truly do not want to use words like "dialogue" or other work-related catch phrases in your home?

Separation of Church and State, Home and Office, are what makes this world tolerable.

When the silly catch-phrases that impress upper management get used at home all you will get is resistance and a lot of eye-rolling.

Sad but true.  Who really talks like that anyway?  Do you want to be one of THOSE people?

You sound smart, reasonable, and a good person.  You are probably a great parent, and spouse.  Don't blow it by using all those silly words that they make you use at work when you are at home with the people you love.

You'll be just fine, remember home is fun....  :-)

Warmest regards and best intentions,

Kate
