Can One Person Really Make a Difference?

Can One Person Really Make a Difference?

With the recent inauguration of President Obama, we are again reminded ad infinitum, ad nauseum of the political rifts that divide this country and, by extension, threaten the world's health and safety. The new president campaigned on change we can believe in, but I believe the change that is required to right the wrongs and put this country back on track require more than politicking and vitriolic exchanges on Internet message boards.

If any of you have seen the movie, Butterfly Effect, which starred Ashton Kutcher as a young man who learned about changing the future by getting to redo past decisions, you will understand the premise of Chaos Theory. Basically, a butterfly beating its wings in flight in the Amazonian rain forest will set off a chain of events that will result in tornadoes in the United States. (Not that I support attacking butterflies as a precaution, mind you.)

Taken to the next level, every action--good or bad--that we do here on this planet has an energy effect that ripples throughout the Universe and attracts more of the same energy back via the Law of Attraction. It isn't just what we will have revisited upon ourselves based on what we put out there, there is a net effect on the rest of the world, too.

What we need to consider in our daily lives is how our daily actions in thought and deed are going to have an effect beyond ourselves. Yes, we may have had a frustrating day at work, but if we go and take it out on someone in some violent way, we are setting off a chain of events that can only create more violence.

The good news is each of us has the power to create a real tangible difference for the world. It doesn't even require signing up for anything or paying membership dues for a special club. All you need to do is start making different, good decisions in your life today, right now. It doesn't matter what decisions you made yesterday or even a week ago. This moment right here is the only one you can actually control, so make a good decision.

Hatred and judgment have a devastating effect on our planet, which is why it seems like we are accelerating our own destruction with countless wars, violence spilling out into our streets, and endless talking heads smiling as they recount the tales of horror for a fearful television audience. But, it doesn't have to be that way. If we just make a few small positive changes in our own lives, those will ripple to other people, and those will ripple further, and so on. Soon there will be so much positive energy that the negative energy will be drowned out.

If you ask me "Can one person really make a difference?", my answer is a resounding "yes!"

Sounds like the Serenity Prayer, mythman

"God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change; Courage to change the things I can; and wisdom to know the difference." http://www.thevoiceforlove.com/serenity-prayer.html Deciding to step away from the crowd and do the right thing if only for the sake of doing the right thing requires courage. Maybe the thread of consciousness that I've woven throughout my article and follow-up comments is that we need the wisdom to know the difference between what we can accomplish in this lifetime without ending each day banging our head on the wall in frustration. I know what that feels like and I am at a point of serenity in my own life now that I've learned the difference between what I was doing and what I want to do. How about the Laissez Faire Party?

Going from the premise that any power we cede to the government is power lost (Constitutional Amendment X notwithstanding), we can seriously minimize the amount of power the government holds against us at the point of a bayonet, if we just learn to reclaim our power. As soon as we reach the point where we reclaim our power without making a big show of it and are able to show other likeminded individuals to do the same, we have a cadre educated and able to spread freedom across the country. I am not working toward this directly right now for various reasons, although I have to a certain degree done this earlier in my life. What we need in this country is a political party that will just be willing to leave those of us who value freedom alone. While we may feel obligated to have a job, make house payments, and pay taxes, there are still many opportunities to be free in the other areas of our life not under the spell of any god or government. (Read: our minds.) There are too many people who are fearful of every manufactured Bogeyman that somebody invents for our consumption. JOIN US IN TOASTING YOUR FUTURE SUCCESS!

@jdh--Suggestion for a New Party? & Maybe a Rethink of the 80/20

Like you say, both parties are in one side of the 'active 20%,' the 80% just goes along with power (as I guess we all should someday), and the other half of the 20% is us---people who know why stuff is going wrong, but are not 'written in the same book as the parties.' You know that both parties are 'on the same team' (i.e. they both CLAIM to want to help the nation prosper), but they each think--at least 'in name'--that the government should be run differently. But they are ALL in a 'republican' system for each of themselves ('democratically'). Our nation needs thought that IS NOT restricted to the system and has no selfish needs of its own, it needs Emperor Abmox! ---GET MONEY FREE for having fans ONLINE, writing about Buddhist Chant, Dr. Hot4Words, Time-Travel, Divine Art

@jdubhub-mythman-veghead--Reminds Me of a Verse in 1 John 1

"We write these things that there might be complete joy." That gave a whole 'Gospel message' to me; they know how to access- and follow the Divine will, and they do it by teaching others to do it the same way they learned. ---GET MONEY FREE for having fans ONLINE, writing about Buddhist Chant, Dr. Hot4Words, Time-Travel, Divine Art

Really,encouraging idea.

Really,encouraging idea. one person can make a difference,but we can not underestimate the collective action of like-minded persons.

Unless you discount the Mormons, that is...

Isn't it the Book of Mormon that says that Jesus came to North America during his 20's (before he started his earthly ministry at about age 30) and ministered to the peoples already here? I see what you are saying and understand the parallel for anyone wanting to create a stirring call to action in a group of people. I'm no Son of God (although I've been called a son-of-a-something-or-other in my day), but I do realize that I am a vessel created in God's image with the allowances for self-respect and responsibility that would entail. I have already decided that I shouldn't be "hiding my light under a basket", so I am going to write what I need to write without feeling the need to defend everything. I respect veghead and her passion for her causes and we don't have to see eye-to-eye on everything. I also respect the fact that she has had dealings in the past with some of the people I read now, but what I read now (in terms of those authors) is only a small part of who I am and what I want to do with my life. I have had contact with some of those having the elitist "new age" mindset and I do avoid them. Thanks for your comment. JOIN US IN TOASTING YOUR FUTURE SUCCESS!

'Saving' jdubhub from Devil's Attorney veghead

You recall that Guy I'm usually talking about? the Carpenter's Son of God? Yeah, He was an Israelite in the days of Roman Empire, and He 'saved the world' WITHOUT ever stepping outside the Roman Kingdom. I'm mixing up a whole bunch o names there, but you're starting to catch the drift: Dude launched a whole religion by simply doing what He was doing where He was when He did it (and telling His friends about it). ---GET MONEY FREE for having fans ONLINE, writing about Buddhist Chant, Dr. Hot4Words, Time-Travel, Divine Art

BIG changes start from SMALL groups, myth, IMHO

The biggest changes in our history started small, far smaller than anything like a majority, and won over the larger group eventually. There is what I remember to be the 10-80-10 rule. The two tens represent the opposite ends of good and bad and the eighty represents those who will go along with whoever is in power. It would be a mistake to say that the Republicans are 10% and Democrats are the other because they are really the same 10% and not necessarily the "good" 10%, either. For any real change to happen, we who want positive direction in this country need to reach a 10% critical mass in order to sway the 80% and wrest control from those who are only out for themselves. I place the majority of the religious rank-and-file in the 80% because they are held mentally if not spiritually captive by those who pull the strings at the top and are pretty much ready to believe whatever doctrine will "save their soul". Those puppeteers are in the "bad" 10%. My entire focus for positive energy and my writing is to help achieve that critical 10%. I am not alone as there are lots of people coming together around the globe in one voice to pull this planet's bacon out of the fire, as it were. Interesting times ahead!
