The Cat
posted December 28, 2008 - 10:51amI was having dinner at an open-air cafeteria with my friend one day when I felt something brush against my leg. I glanced down from my plate and stared into the greenish eyes of a Tabby cat. It had grey colored fur which ran all along its back to its tail, some smart black stripes that slicked on top of its head to its face, and a white furry chest. It sensed me staring at it and looked up at me and said: "Meow".
Now I admit I have a fondness for cats. If I'm alone and a cat passes by I'll try to grab its attention by doing things such as snapping my fingers or whistling at it (when no human being is around). I even talk to them sometimes (those of you who are cat-owners should understand) and tell them things which I don't normally tell my friends or family. Right now this cat was sitting at my leg, meowing at me. I presumed that it was hungry, due to the fact that it kept on staring at me and the tabletop.
"What do you want?" I asked it. It blinked and meowed and rubbed its head against my jeans. No doubt it was acting cute in order to try and get something edible from me. "I'm not giving you my share because I'm too skinny already, see?" I pointed my finger at it. It thought that I was going to hit it and it shut its eyes and twitched its ears back. Realizing that that wasn't the case, it tried to grab my still-outstretched-finger. I snapped my hand back and continued eating.
A moment later, I heard another meow from below. The Tabby was still there at my feet, staring at me with renewed intensity. It was probably thinking: If I can mesmerize this human, I can get it to do whatever I want......
"Can't you go harass somebody else? There are so many other tables around here."
"Meow..."
"Go away."
"Meowwww......"
I couldn't seem to get rid of this cat which seemed hell-bent on getting some food from me. Oh well, I thought, why not just a serving? I deliberately dropped a piece of fish down to the floor beside the cat. It gobbled down the fish in less than three seconds and was staring at me again. "Meow!" I didn't respond. The next thing it did was to stand up and put its front paws on my lap! I stared at it with my eyebrows arched. "That's enough for you, Fatty." But it didn't budge until I shoved my leg away. It continued staring and meowing at me, this time crouching lower and swinging its tail. I didn't like the look of that; it was probably going to jump on my lap at any second, without my permission! I didn't want to kick it so I dropped down another small piece of fish, this time further away from my legs. It wasn't long before green-eyed Fatty returned and I had no choice but to pass another few more slices until it had eaten its fill.
After licking its mouth, it stared at me again and brushed its tail against my legs before leaving (oh well, at least it had the grace to show its appreciation). I guess it got its way in the end after all.
