The Chess Game

The Chess Game

Once upon a time… a long, long, time ago, there was a knight who had been charged with treason along with a third of the army. They were sentenced to be banished. But, the knight responded that he shouldn’t be banished, because all of the king&rsquo s subjects were actually traitors, murderers, adulterers, thieves, and liars and if they played a little game he could prove it was so.

The king was just and decided to take on the knight’s challenge, even though the king could have put the knight to death right then and there.  The king even allowed the knight to be involved in setting up the ground rules.

The rules of the game involved principles, legal matters, and how the subjects of the kingdom responded in the game. The knight recommended that they use the king’s own character and morals as a basis. The king agreed. 800px-A_Game_of_Chess_by_Jules_Jacquet_after_Ernest_Meissonier.jpg

Both the king and the knight knew that the king was just. So, the knight suggested that the king should judge the subjects. This was a trap, for the knight was only doing this to cause the king pain, because he knew the king would be grieved at his subjects actions.

As they set up the ground rules the knight kept bringing up more and more of the good qualities of the king. The rules got harder and harder and harder, until they became grand and glorious. The king knew that the harder it got the less likely any of the subjects would be able to succeed, but he had a plan. The knight even recommended that the king’s own dietary habits be used also, because of what they agreed on before about the King’s thoughts as right and wrong, and that character should be used as a basis. The setting up of the rules went on for a long time.

The king told the knight that there had to be some end to this game. The king told the knight that when he was finally satisfied, he would end the game. The knight agreed to this because the longer the game went on, the longer he would be free from the executioner if he lost. The king told the knight that at the end of the game he would personally bring each person into judgment to see if they had passed the test.

The king said that if the subjects were to be judged for their actions that they should also be rewarded for their good while playing the game. And it was so.

The king told the knight that it was only fair that if even one person was found to be perfect then the knight would be condemned. To which the knight knew would be no problem, for the knight knew how just, wise, and discerning that the king was, for the knight had been with the king for years.

The knight also knew that he himself was a master at causing the king’s subject to rebel against the king. He had done it successfully to a third of the king’s armies. The knight also knew that the king would lay down his life for his people, he would sacrifice his own power for others, and that he would give all for the betterment of his kingdom and he knew that no person except the king was as good as the king, except for the king’s son. But, the game was being played with the race of men, and that his son was not of the race of men, for they were of a race that lived for thousands and thousands of years; the subject only lived for just a couple hundred years at most, so the son would be of no threat to the knight.

The king told the knight that only those subjects who wished to participate would be judged, and the knight told the king that it was only fair if parents chose to participate that that their children would have to participate also; to which the king agreed, for the king had a motto, all for one and one for all. And so this was one of the principles that was set up in the game; whatever one does it effects them all.

In their planning they decided to limit the area of the game. They decided to set the game up in a new town. They would test only the people in that one town. The town would start off with only one couple, to which they both agreed.

As they planned, they decided to keep the participants ignorant. But they had to find a way to get them to volunteer for the game. The knight came up with an idea. It is simple, he told the king, and all you have to do is give the couple one command to not eat a certain piece of fruit. It doesn’t matter what tree it is on, any one you choose, and if they eat of it, in rebellion to you, they have to play the game. For, they are in rebellion to you and that will be their punishment.

The king agreed to this, but he made the stipulation that if the couple eats from the tree then they will eventually get a copy of the rules and the nature of his character, so that they could pass it onto their children. The knight agreed because he knew people couldn’t keep a set of rules, just because the rules said so. They actually had to have the nature of goodness, nobility, courage, self sacrifice, and love in them to get even close to the nature of the king and keeping all the rules.

There were other guidelines for the game; like if the people decided to play then the knight would get to rule over their town to test them further. The king agreed, but told the knight that if they did call out to the king that he could be involved in their life and help them.

So, the day came and the king moved the couple into their new town. The king designed a beautiful garden for them; you could almost say it was like paradise. One day the knight stood by the tree as the wife was walking in the garden.

“Hey you, do you want to be wise?”

“What do I have to do?”

“All you have to do is eat from this tree.”

“Oh I can’t do that, the king said we would die if we ate of it.”

“Oh, you won’t die when you eat of it (The knight said they wouldn’t immediately die, but they would eventually die when they faced the judgment of the king). You shall be like the king, knowing all of his heart and nature. He is so good. And you will become so wise for you will know exactly what is good and evil. You see there is this book your family will eventually get; telling you all of the nature of the king. Isn’t he so good?”

“Well, yes he is.”

“See, you will be like him, knowing good and evil. So, just take a bite and give some to your husband.”

Hmmm… It looks like it is edible and it will make me wise. Hmmm… Ok, I’ll eat of it.”

She then took some to her husband and he thought about it. He knew she had done wrong and the king would probably banish her from the town, because of what she had done. He didn’t want to be separated from her. They were so close, and he loved her so much. She was such a part of him that it was almost like she had been torn from his side. If she got banished, she would actually be torn from him. He knew he couldn’t bear that. He decided because he loved his wife, he cast his lot in with her and he ate.

The knight was happy because he had corrupted the first family and so all the members who ever grew up in that town would have to play and he would rule over them.

The End… and the rest is history.

Oh, did I forget to mention who won the game? Well, I guess I did.

Well, the king had an ace up his sleeve. He had a son who gave up his rights to live in the palace and moved to that little town and became one of the townsfolk. The son was so like in nature to the king; though he had many difficulties, he eventually sacrificed his own life for the people and won the game for his father.

What was the son’s name you say? His name is Jesus, the Lamb that was slain to purchase men for God.

P.S. I just wanted to let you know that the game is actually still going on in that little town. The knight still accuses people to the king and the knight still rules over that town. What was the town called? Oh, it had a strange name something like ‘Earth.’

The knight is still so crafty that when people see all the suffering in the town the knight blames it on the king, even though the knight is the actual ruler of the town and is equated somewhere as the god of that town.

The king still helps out the people of that town when they call.

The king is actually letting the game continue even though he has already won because he wants more people in the golden city; that he is moving them to the end of the game. I hear he has set up another garden in that town even more glorious than the first one.

I guess the knight still tries to get the people to break all the rules, so that when the king eventually brings them into judgment it will break the king’s heart. For the knight knows that the king will weep when he has to send even one of his subjects away.

The king still judges his subjects because he said he would do so, even though the game is won. From what I hear the king does not think it is right or wise to reward people who were just evil all the time within paradise. Plus, they would probably have a hard time there around a bunch of people that actually love each other. Not that any of the subjects ever fulfilled all the rules, or will ever be worthy of the king’s glory, except his son. But, the king is gracious and even uses murderers to tell other people about how good his son is.

What are some of the names of those murders he used, you say? Oh, I think one was Moses, another was David, and another I think was Saul, who was called Paul an Apostle.

The king is also so gracious that he used and saved a guy comparable to Hitler. I mean this guy was bad. He destroyed whole countries, towns, and cities. His soldiers committed genocide; even ripping babies out of pregnant women, which killed them. This guy is also comparable to Hitler because he slaughtered this little country called Israel and burned their temple. This guy was even crazy. One day the guy ran out into the wilderness and ate grass for months while he was in one of his psychotic episodes.

The king in his mercy turned around and accepted this guy and even let him write a chapter in one of the king’s holy books. What was his name…? Oh yeah, Nebuchadnezzar.

Wow, that king is so amazing, gracious and merciful.

The game has been won and the rules have been changed since the son sacrificed his life. The rules are something like, ‘Don’t judge and you won’t be judged’ at the judgment. ‘Don’t fear,’ which is actually good and mentally healthy for those people, though it is sure hard to do at times. As you treat others in this life, you will be treated in that new city. Give to others when they ask for the king gives things to them, that is if it is good for them. The king is a good father to them. Would you give your young teenager a new Cadillac if you knew they were not ready for it and that it might kill them? I guess that is what he is working on in his subjects; actually creating some fine and good characteristics in them.

And I think another one of the principles for them is ‘love the king and love others.’ Love is such a good thing, and such an easy concept, but oh so hard. I know, I know, I have trouble with this simple principle also. Just like a good dad is that king; making such hard and complex ideas so simple. No wonder people of that town call him ‘Abba’ or ‘Daddy.’

That is the end of my story. If you do happen to run into one of the residence of that town someday, wish him or her well for me. I hear they travel through every once in awhile. Show some love to them and help them on their way. You never know, they might one day be one of the rulers, and one of your best friends, in that golden city called; the New Jerusalem.

Oh, if you happen to run into the king’s son….. you know Jesus……ask him if he will save me a dance when I get there.
God bless
