Children, and High Cholesterol
posted August 1, 2008 - 11:33amThe American Academy of Pediatrics are urging doctors to screen kids as young as 8 years old for high cholesterol, and to put them on more cholesterol-lowering drugs.
It seems that children with a family history of inherited cholesterol disease are getting overlooked in th medical community. Also children who are overweight or have other heart disease, and risk factors are also overlooked, according to The Arizona Republic's article, "Academy: Screen Kids for High Cholesterol".
Personally, I believe that instead of placing children on cholesterol lowering drugs with potentially bad side effects one should try other natural means first, especially if the child is overweight. I have written about my efforts to control my own cholesterol without the use of drugs, by utilizing diet, nutritional supplements, and exercise. All efforts that children can also use. The statins have too many potential side effects such as liver problems, and muscle problems. Besides what are we choosing to tell your children? You can live any way you want as long as their is a pill to combate it. This doesn't foster personal responsibility for one's health. People want to blame their doctor for their health problems, but he isn't God. He or she doesn't follow you around all day, and say don't eat that doughnut, now exercise, don't smoke, etc. So if you and your child want to lower cholesterol the natural way click on the article below.
