The ability to speak with both parties easily
They should be able to frankly discuss some subjects
They should not belittle either party
They should be able to encourage both parties to communicate
They should address different issues at each session
The ability to keep things in control during sessions is important
A qualified counselor should not side consistently with the same party
They should have patience
Good listening abilities should be a skill
They should have some awards to display
A large clientele is always good
If someone has recommended them to you it is a plus
To ask both parties to explain how certain issues makes them feel can release tensions and bring things out in the open
A good counselor should be available to speak to you in the event of an emergency or if you have important questions between Sessions
the right counselor should have both parties work on and complete relationship solving assignments. the results of these assignments should be discussed in the next session
The right counselor should provide services equal to the amount of money they charge
They should be able to recommend literature and videos that the couple can read and watch together highlighting specifically addressed issues in their relationship
The right counselor should enable both parties to feel at ease and provide an atmosphere in which the couple can discuss marriage issues
The counselor should not ever divulge confidential information to anyone else
The right counselor should encourage the couple to resolve their issues if at all possible or realistically consider a separation and divorce
A really good counselor should be able to recommend community support groups and other resources to help keep your marriage together
