Class Envy Rap -- “Chevy Chevette”
posted April 1, 2007 - 9:22amCHEVY CHEVETTE
All I need is a Chevy Chevette in life
To go from A to B
From a girl who loves me
To a job that feeds me
To pick up a son from school
To go through the green light cool
In peace and harmony
To
stop at red
Without anger
With enough grocery
In the trunk
To feed three.
But Lord
That Benz is eating me!
I’m shrinking here thinking
The Jag next to me at the STOP sign
The threat that’ll vanish
Before I shift into a wish
Is how I’ll be judged
As long as I have
This breath in me.
Are we choosing our cars
Or are they picking us
Like ripe melons at a nursery?
Glass bedrooms above an ocean
Holidays at Nice and Aspen
Three hundred seventy horsepower
Just to scoot around this earth
Where money meets adrenaline.
Men and women wrapped in Rolex
Hitting an eagle on earth and heaven.
Life is a break from work for me
Fun is serious business for them
That needs to be optimized and planned
And every conversation
Is either paid for
Or brought to an uneventful close
Like a mercy killing
With no hesitation
For the sake of class.
Over there at Palm Springs
Is the laughter
Of a million DOLLARS a year
But not of the MAN
Who makes
A million dollars a year.
Money’s smiling.
The guy’s sulking.
Here inside this Chevy Chevette
Is the silence
Of thirty grand a year
But not of the man
Who makes something like that
And sometimes
Not even close.
The guy’s drunk silly
Still jiving
Doesn’t know what he’s talking.
A Chevy Chevette is all he needs in life
While dreaming of a Ferrari
And praying for sin
Turned up on high
Man, cooking!
