Clothesline Bliss
posted August 12, 2007 - 5:14pmI was raised since a young girl I was taught to use a clothes line to hang clothes on and most of my life I have used one. While having an electric clothes dryer has it's advantages during wet, rainy weather and in the winter months. There is very good
reasons to use a clothesline in the Spring, Summer and fall months.

A couple of years ago I had a long pulley type clothes line attached to my house back porch. The other end was attached to a large cedar tree. As you hang clothes you move the pulley to cause the clothes to go out on the line and make more room for hanging the next few clothing. Long pieces like sheets, towels, night gowns etc. Get hung first and the short clothes last.
My husband however took my pulley line down two years ago to build on the carport at the house so we did not have to walk or rather skate down to the carport at the garage in winter months. Chancing a bad fall or injury on ice. It has been a real blessing to have the dry carport right out our back door and to be able to drive up to the house and park to unload groceries and other items rather than unloading them like we did the first five years we have been here onto a wagon or sled depending on the season.

However when he took the clothesline down I didn't have the use of it and he promised he would rig up another one as soon as the carport was done. Meanwhile I used the dryer. Well last summer came and I kept asking him when he was putting the clothesline back up and he kept putting me off and telling me soon. It never got done and I was rather perturbed about it. I asked him why he didn't to put it back up and he said. It hurt his back to pack the wet clothes out to the line. I looked at him and said "No one asked YOU to pack them out to the clothesline" I certainly never asked him to do it. So it being late fall by then and he had to finish getting in our winter wood. I didn't get the clothesline put back up last year.
This spring I have been asking him to put it up since the first of April and he had one excuse or another among the same one he had last year. Finally I told him I like having a clothesline. I don't expect or even WANT you to take the clothes out to the line. I want to do it. He asked me why and here are the reasons I gave him.
1. I get more exercise
2. I get more fresh air and sunshine
3. The clothes smell awesome after drying in the sun and wind
4. It saves on the electric bill and so we save money
5. I interact with him more when he is outside doing things too.
6. It makes me happy and I feel better for it.
7. I can teach the grandchildren the benefits of a clothes line too.
8. I will stop nagging you about putting it up.

So he got the things needed to put up a new pulley clothesline and after not having a clothesline for two years I now have a new pulley clothesline up. It is not quite as long as the old line. It only holds three baskets of clothes, the old one held five. But I don't mind the main thing is I have my clothes line back and will benefit from many ways for having it. I am very happy with it and feel good about it.
I had to hunt up clothes to wash the day he got it finally up back in June today though to put on my new line. Usually there are lots of clothes to wash but for some reason that day there were not as many as usual. But hunting through the house, bathrooms, bedrooms and kitchen I came up with two loads of wash and took great delight seeing them dancing in the breeze. I am content love taking them down as well and folding them with all that fresh air smell they have.
