Code Pink And Cindy Sheehan Arrested At General Petraeus Hearing

Protest group "Code Pink" and Cindy Sheehan were arrested for disrupting General Petraeus during the hearing before a Congressional Committee today.

Here is part of a transcript of the procedings.

PETRAEUS: It is increasingly apparent to both coalition and Iraqi leaders that Iran, through the use of the Quds Force, seeks to turn the Iraqi special groups into a Hezbollah-like force to serve its interests and fight a proxy war against the Iraqi state and coalition forces in Iraq.

CODE PINK CHICK: That's a lie!

PETRAEUS: The most significant development in the past six months likely has been the increasing emergence --

CODE PINK CHICK: That's a lie!

SKELTON: Will the gentleman suspend with the --

CODE PINK CHICK: That's a lie!

SKELTON: Will the entire group that's back there supporting that person be removed?

PETRAEUS: the most significant development --

SKELTON: Just a minute, general.

......

PETRAEUS: All Americans should be very proud of their sons and daughters serving in Iraq today. Thank you very much.

CODE PINK CHICK: General Petraeus (screaming unintelligible gobbly gook). The American people don't believe you anymore!

SKELTON: Let me make this announcement. Please remove them.

CODE PINK WOMAN: (Shrieking) I have a right to speak! Arrrrgh! Arrrgh!

SKELTON: Will be prosecuted under Section 10, 503.16 of the District of Columbia, and we will prosecute them under the law.

Media Bias

"Sometimes I don't know what to think anymore." What is important is that you think. Too many people dont think, they just react. I agree with you that most media news is presented in a shamelessly biased tone. I wrote a comment earlier on the ethical demand that I, personally feel, to differentiate between news and editorials. It seems to be a finer point of journalism that falls by the wayside. The job of a journalist is to report the news, not edit it or slant. The appropriate forum for opinion is the editorial. That said, I do believe that Cindy Sheehan and Code Pink chose a poor method of making their case. I think they lost the respect of many people who might have listened to them and that it hurt their credibility. They were allowed into the Gallery because this is a free country and because they do enjoy the Right to free speech... as long as they respect the rights of others. They did not do this today. They were ill mannered and disrespectful. They disturbed the peace of the assembly and refused to stop when they were told to stop. They were arrested. They were given a chance to sit in the Gallery and to behave in a civilized fashion, even though they were known to be persons who did not agree with current government policies, because they had a right to attend. I am sure that they would have been given a voice after the hearing on any number of news channels that support their political position, had they behaved in a civilized manner. Cindy Sheehan has been interviewed on national news shows frequently, and as a political candidate has access to the same media resources as all the other candidates. Screaming and name calling does not seem to me to have been a mature choice of method in getting her message across. I know many who agree with her politics but were embarrassed by her behaviour today.

What I meant...

What I meant, Angel, was that the media is controlled (television, newspaper, and most radio) so that the talking heads can say whatever they want and censor or ignore completely the response to what they said to make it sound like everyone is in agreement with them, aka the Bully Pulpit. If Cindy Sheehan and her group had dressed in their Sunday best and asked to hold a debate with General Petraeus in front of network television cameras, they would either be mocked or ignored. So, had they not gone to Washington to make their feelings known in the only manner left to them where people would take notice of them, Petraeus' carefully prepared report, drafted and vetted by Bush and Company, would have been accepted at face value by the general public. Video: Claim v. Fact on Iraq Petraeus' Testimony on the Status of Operations in Iraq Yes, those of us that value Freedom of Speech still have the Internet and are free to exchange ideas and speak our truths, but most people don't get their news and information from the Internet. They get it from the controlled media. So, Sheehan did what she needed to do to bring attention to the lies and half-truths being told by Petraeus to Congress. She has already done a lot to make sure people notice what passes for facts over the past several years and surely she has developed a thick skin for what ridicule has already and will come her way over what took place in Washington today. People (hopefully) will be more interested now in looking deeper into what Petraeus/Bush reported and will (hopefully) do some due diligence before accepting his report as cold, hard fact. Plus, really, why did they let her in the gallery in Congress at all? Cindy Sheehan has not exactly been reclusive these past few years. No doubt she and her Code Pink group are on at least one list in alphabetland in Washington, so someone in charge of the Department of Fatherland--er, Homeland--Security must have known that she wasn't there to cheerlead for Petraeus and the war. Could she and her group have been baited to do what she did to bring credibility to the report? (Everyone agrees with the report except for those screeching hippies in the back row!) Sometimes I don't know what to think anymore. _______________________________________________________ "Treason doth never prosper, what's the reason? I Am So Confused

Be careful. Dont bad mouth hippies. You can not compare then and now. As an experienced protester (yes, I was there in the 60's), I would not have chosen a time and place to protest that had no hope of success. By disrupting an event the whole country was waiting to hear, they did not present themselves in a positive way. Few heard their message. They were seen being rude, ill mannered, uncivilized and undisciplined by the world. This did not contribute to their credibility or gain them supporters for their cause. One must choose the time, place and manner of protest and civil disobedience carefully if one wishes to be effective. Simply creating mayhem is not good enough. And I dont understand this: "What should be decried and bemoaned is not the fact that Sheehan and Company "disrupted" the festivities, but the fact that the American people must resort to such tactics to make their voice heard........ that Cindy Sheehan and Code Pink were forced to do what they did for the very reason than every other avenue of protest was removed from them." I find this very confusing. I just dont understand what you are talking about. How has their right to free speech been removed? Are they under some gag order about which I have not heard? We have free speech. They are free to speak and to make their opinions known. We all are. You and I come here and post our opinions everyday. Angel

Oh, that's right. War is good. Against the war is bad.

I forgot for a moment that you believe that war is good and anyone against the war for any reason whatsoever is a "hippy" and "ignorant". Maybe it's because you have nothing vested in the war and can sit safely thousands of miles away from behind the safety of your keyboard and "support" the war. Cindy Sheehan lost her son in the phony war, therefore she has earned her right to be pissed about the conduct of Bush's regime. As far as "rules and regulations" are concerned, perhaps we should revisit the oath that all officers and even the president take to "defend the Constitution against all enemies, foreign and domestic". What Bush has done to the Constitution goes against everything the Founders intended and is itself a crime against the Constitution. Unfortunately, you have been unable to look beyond your own bias and recognize that Cindy Sheehan and Code Pink were forced to do what they did for the very reason than every other avenue of protest was removed from them. For that reason, I support them fully. _______________________________________________________ "Treason doth never prosper, what's the reason? Yes, the First Amendment is

Yes, the First Amendment is alive and well. Unfortunately for Cindy and company, there are rules and regulations when visiting congressional buildings and events. Ignorantly believing that Petraeus is a liar does not mean they can break the rules without penalty, so now they must deal with the consequences. But, hippies as they are, they must have figured that the penalty should be overlooked because they bring the message of "peace...not war, man".

Glad to see the First Amendment is still alive and well...

Cindy Sheehan and Code Pink had every right to be there to counter the lies being spoken by Petraeus, if we still live in a place where freedom of speech is valued. Since the media is controlled and too high a percentage of the American public still believes everything they hear, read, or see via said media, someone has to step up and show that not everything that comes forth out of the mouth of the talking heads in and out of uniform is the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth. What should be decried and bemoaned is not the fact that Sheehan and Company "disrupted" the festivities, but the fact that the American people must resort to such tactics to make their voice heard. _______________________________________________________ "Treason doth never prosper, what's the reason? Outstanding! There's nothing

Outstanding! There's nothing I like to see more than stupid hippies getting arrested for being stupid hippies. And I thought good ol' Cindy retired. I guess she can't help being utterly misguided and the perpetual laughing stock of the anti-war movement.
