College Football's Only Problem: Our Seeding System

Repeatedly we have been disappointed to see the wrong teams go up for the championship game in college football. What is it going to take us to install a playoff system to allow the right teams their fair shot at winning a national title?

During college football season we love to watch for our favorites but usually there is one underdog that emerges from the smoke. Sometimes this underrated team will have to face the hard and unfair truth that there will not be a chance at a national title game regardless of their no-loss accomplishment. How do you explain to your players that even though you did not lose one single game in the regular season, there is still no chance for you to be the number one team in the country? Not only does this infuriate the players but any real sports fan can feel this pain as well. This takes the fun out of seeing a no name team go on to beat one of the juggernauts that is requiring a victory because we know that they will still be in the running for a title shot.

All of the bowl games are meaningful in their own way but there are so many of them it is hard to keep track of the teams and their opposites. The whole purpose of the regular season is to divide the average teams from the exceptional teams to allow maximum competition for everyone involved. You want to see the #1 team play the #2 team because that is the logical and fair thing to do. However, with the system we have in place now, we are giving this decision up to a computer that analyzes the physical statistics of each team to determine the numbering scale. From a technical standpoint, it makes sense because you have all of the relevant statistics determining which team is better. What this system does not take into consideration is the real life situations and circumstances that go with the game of football. This can include the weather, injuries, recent events that may have an affect on the team's concentration and other numerous factors.

IF you were the president in charge of making the decision, would you keep the old one or install a new system that you feel would better define each team and its standing amongst its competitors? I would have to say adopt a new system that would allow both bowl games and a playoff tree to make sure the right team receives the appropriate commendation. Yeah, I know it is not that easy but from a college football fan, you have to think about what the game would be like if it were that way! Maybe the next time your #2 team gets beat by my unranked team, you will think twice about not having the playoff tree. Who knows, you might come back to beat us in the second game which would make a killer rivalry! After all, this is what every loyal fan wants to see anyways, right?
