The Comedian's Dilemma: Making Fun of Obama
posted November 7, 2008 - 2:02pmI was reading a post election interview Larry King interview with Bill Maher, and he raised some interesting concerns about Obama from a comedian's perspective:
King: You recently issued one of your new rules decreeing that Obama must give comedians something to work with. Any suggestions?
Maher: No. It's very difficult. We have been spoiled, first with Bill Clinton and then George Bush. And here's a president now who -- he's not stupid. He's not angry. He's not a phony. He's not fat. He's not cheating on his wife.
Who needs a jerk like that around for the next four years? Come on.
(LAUGHTER)
But look, he's going to be the president and we're going to have to get over our nervousness about making fun of a black person. He's not a black person. He's the president.
I have to admit, I'm stumped on that one, myself. But most likely, as we get to know our new president, new material will present itself. Governor Arnold scored a few laughs poking fun at Obama's skinny physique. But that would get pretty thin (pun intended) in very short order.
Maher is right, Clinton and Bush spoiled us in providing such a wealth of character traits to lampoon: Clinton with his addiction to fast food, and his womanizing; Bush...well, Bush is just linguistically challenged and dumber than garden produce. He was endless fountain of inspiration for anyone in the comedic arts. His like, we can only hope, will not be seen again in the Oval Office in our lifetime...or our children's lifetimes...or their children's lifetimes...ever again as long as humans are still breathing air, and our planet is capable of sustaining life of any sort.
Perhaps after 8 years of our country being run into the ground by a comedian's wet dream, it's ok that we won't have as much good material coming from 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. I can live with that.
