An Italian political satirist insulted the Pope in front of cheering Romans, but the government has blocked any attempt to prosecute. This was likely to open up a huge can of worms as any prosecution would have brought back into the spotlight the controversial concordat of 1929 between Mussolini's Italy and the Vatican.

Actually, was a lady comedienne at some gay rights festival. The Roman attitude to the Vatican can be unpredictable. The city is notorious for getting rid of Caesars and Popes in the past, and just a bit too close to the centre to not notice the reality of the Vatican as a temporal power.
